The Celtic Store, the Filthies and a Thursday Night Surprise - By N.L. Belardes
It’s Wednesday afternoon and you want to get in touch with the music scene. Something, anything. You need a taste. Where’s it all going? Where's everyone hiding? What do Bakersfield bands do when they’re not staying up until 3am recording songs of lost love and bygone punk days? Maybe you just need to answer this question: Tell me, where does Kenny Mount hang when he’s not at his day job?
I got a call from Mr. Filthy around 10:30am that answered all of the above and more. Kenny was hanging down at Thistle N Rose, the lone Celtic store the San Joaquin Valley has to offer. If it’s St. Patty’s Day and you want something authentic, this is the place to spend a little cash. If you’re watching World Cup Soccer and you’re supporting Ireland or Scotland, this is where you purchase a flag or buy a can of some Celtic foodstuff to eat during the big game. It’s that authentic. But don't stop there. Order clothing, buy musical instruments. You want to find Kevin Briley? Go talk to Herald Yule. He’s been downtown for nearly twenty years and probably still fixes Kevin a mean cup of tea as well as keep tabs on the lad. He fixed a cup for me and Kenny, though he did say Kenny was a little off for adding milk to his tea. And that's about when I walked up. Everyone sat at the table in the back of the store. You'll see this sacred meeting place in on the Thistle N Rose home page... It's a simple table, but there's a history surrounding such simple pieces of furniture that in this case signifies years of great discussion and chess matches...
Now, let me remind you all of something going on tomorrow night that you can’t miss: Thursday Night War. That’s right, it's the Battle of the Bands. And guess who’s going to be there? Right again, the Filthies. Now let me fill you in on a little secret. Tomorrow night there’s going to be special festivities ala Filthies style! Oh yes, Kenny told me all about the special happenings he’s got planned for the Battle of the Bands. And I'm not tellin'! You're just going to have to show up to find out. What? You’re not Irish so you don’t want to go?? Well I’m Latino and I’m still going to show up and jam along with great Filthies tunes like Embalm You and Donut Shop. And don't forget the competing bands: Exithead and Gramercy Riff. I have yet to hear these bands and I'm looking forward to some great signature photos of them--if they're willing to be in a photo of course... Why not? So put your shoes on and show up. Don't let anyone else tell you about Kenny and the Filthies dirty secrets. Find out for yourself! See you there!
