Las Vegas, The House of Blues, and the Reverend Horton Heat

I was in Vegas Saturday through Monday, lurking around my old stomping grounds in downtown Vegas. Took some friends to watch the cheesy-as-hell Fremont Street Experience. Reminisced about the days of yesterday: the free food in the casinos, an artist on the loose downtown, causing trouble at the Golden Nugget while getting paid to think up kooky ideas, seeing my artwork stretched across 4.5 city blocks in a pixilated canopy of lights. It was all good times. I even stopped in the Fitzgerald’s. Whiskey Galore is playing there on March 17th. I just talked to Kevin Briley on the phone and we talked about their one-of-a-kind band. He said, “There’s only a few bands in the entire country that do what we do and only one other band in California who comes close.” That’s impressive, and these guys are local. That’s how rare such talent is. Get out your mugs of beer and head to Las Vegas. It’s time to smash mugs with the boys of Whiskey Galore!

Sunday, March 13th I was sitting in the House of Blues in the ka-ching ka-ching zing of eternal slot machinery gone haywire and eating a hamburger. I could see out on the pit floor the bright lights and gambler’s eyes fixated on their next moment’s slot machine woes. At the table next to me was a punker roadie of the Black Label Society Mafia. He looked like he was going to eat the whole bar with his grungy cyberpunk stares. But he didn’t. He was laughing, enjoying himself, having some good times since the guys from his band had just played the night before in the House of Blues.

On the table I noticed a flyer for the House of Blues line-up. Thursday,
Reverend Horton Heat was slated to play with Trainwreck and Supersuckers.

And their very next gig? You guessed it: The Montgomery World Plaza right here in the rockabilly derailed grape-growing heartland of heartlands, Bakersfield See-Ay (CA). The Reverend just listed on his site:

“Fixed some info for a few of the tour dates. Wanted to let you all know that the show in Bakersfield, CA still has some tickets. You can click on the venue name on the Tour Dates page to buy them. We'll be adding a new and improved email list in the next few days. If you were signed up before, you're gonna have to sign up again. More details will be coming in the next few days. The guys will be hitting the road in the next couple of days, so make sure you keep an eye out for em in your town.”

Oh we will be looking for the Reverend to lock fists with his guitar and lay one on Nashville West. You gotta love when bands come here and they start talking about Bakersfield. I know I wonder what their perspectives are. And thank
Tim Gardea for bringing these guys to town…
