Liars and Thieves last Sunday at Riley's - by N.L. Belardes
Have you heard? The new Bakersfield experiment in rock going around, infecting musicians from the Oleander Arts Collective and across this rural city of counterculture youth? It fills the venues with fast guitars, fast lyrics and driving jazz-funk-rock alt beats. Add in crushing rock percussion and witty lyrics about the energy of greater humanity, about taking control of creative destiny, about never giving up…about people letting you down—shake it! If you want to fit together the pieces of this new Bakersfield experiment you will have to stir in musicians Sal, Rahl and Nick/Tyler from Liars and Thieves. Just add water after that. If you want more, talk to Broken Record Gospel…

As Liars and Thieves set up at Rileys Sunday night I noticed there were four writers in the house, each with a unique perspective on what really adds up to great rock music. JR of Illpressed wrote, “It couldn't have been more honest rock n roll if the lead singer had put on his blue suede shoe's I'm telling ya.” Matildakay stood in the darkness with Flower in the Dale, both enjoying the music from Sal’s first guitar lick to his lasting and echoing croon, both commenting on the excitement of sounds coming from this three-piece band.

But Sal didn’t like that people seemed to be a little too laid back. “You need to all stand in front of me,” Sal gestured, waving his arms in between songs. “What do you think this is, a coffeehouse? Quit sittin’ around!” You can’t blame Sal. Liars and Thieves don’t just create new, fast songs for the faint of heart; these guys have an energy in their music as refreshing as their catchy drum beats, as lively as their angry grunts, and as roughly melodic as their retro driving guitar sounds. Their hipster look is just as appealing as their new Bakersfield experiment in grinding sounds that makes these three musicians easily sound like five. Hold onto your seats, Sal’s arm is long-healed now… the new Bakersfield experiment in sound is here…

I wasn't able to stay for Your Mother's Lover, but I got
this great melancholy image of one half of their band...
