Matt Munoz of Mento Buru, and the Latino underground scene at Chencho's - by N.L. Belardes
Matt Munoz of Mento Buru, that Latino ska band from yesterday and today. I had mentioned old Rob Kranovich from the Geneva Street Hoodlums of the 70s, my old friend down in the South Bakersfield ghetto where a bunch of us yahoos grew up to become artists and punks. Here's what Matt had to say about old Mento Buru and a few other things...
Rob Kranovich, yeah! I haven't seen him in a while. I remember when him and another band former band member were going to Cal Poly SLO, and we used to go play there all the time. Good mems...Hazy, but good..lol.
I'm glad you, Jesse, and everyone else are busy blogging. I live and work in LA and keep up with the local stuff through all of you. I pretty much live two
lives here... Mento keeps getting booked, so I rarely spend a weekend in LA.
I have a plan that if I get sick of LA, I will come back to Bako permanently and commit myself to the Bako music scene again. For years, we've kind of done our
own thing. All the bands we came up with are gone! There have actually been some really good local bands I was starting to follow: Second Hand Saints, Mission: Tonight, then POOF..gone!
I'd like to put shows together with different types of bands like it used to be. I don't like splintering the scene. Even of the current state is mainly harder edged, I think many bands have mutual fans. Maybe our veteran status can be used to guide and help bands? I'm really into the roc en espanol scene right now, and want to keep bringing more of those bands to town and teaming them up with the some of the locals.
The Nate Berg thing is a really good read. I personally don't have a beef with Nate, since we don't work at Jerry's, but I understand people's frustrations. We need a good, safe, downtown all ages venue. That's another project I have on the side.
Oh yeah, Los Abandoned, Las Quince Letras, Los Olvidados, and Liky2(local), are supposed to be perfoming at Chencho's tonight (4/8). Try to make it out. A very important underground scene that deserves notice.
Peace,
Matt
