U2 at the Anaheim Pond, April 1st - by N.L. Belardes
I'm an old school U2 fan. I first ALMOST went to a U2 concert at the US festival years ago during the War Tour. I first saw them on the Unforgettable Fire Tour and have been one of those geeky Bono fans ever since. I was hoping I would get some pictures of the concert in time today to post, but didn't, so decided on a brief write-up.
What can I say about U2? The concerts are more political and scripted than ever. But there were still impromptu moments: the dance on the catwalk with a skinny mohawk chick, Tiffany; Bono's reference to an ailing Pope, even though the Pope passed on today. I heard church bells ringing, so I just knew... (view the set list here and a good write-up of the show. Add Yahweh, it was left off the list. View Bono's comments today on the passing of the Pope)
A great concert followed by a whale of a Pond staffing blunder. Seems after U2 left the stage for good that the Pond allowed the fans to beg and plead for another encore. There was a sea of cell phone lights (yes, the days of lighters seem long gone). Nowadays, the blue-green of waving and flickering cell phone lights adds an eerie high-tech firefly glow to a big concert venue...
Anyway, after about 5 minutes of that the house lights suddenly came on and for the first time ever, I heard booing at a U2 concert... That was as surreal as the passing of the Pope on the day after Bono mentioned him...
