N.L. dragged into mud over New Orleans crisis - By N.L. Belardes

Looks like my name was dragged into the mud of skeptics disbelieving the New Orleans disaster. Someone disbelieving the Mike Charles Survivor blog seems to think I am part of a disaster conspiracy.

I've got a question, and as the tone of your writing would suggest, I'm sure you can appreciate a sceptic:

How is it that n.l. belardes found out about you surviving by "floating on a car" a full day before you actually posted that fact on your blog here?

At 1:54pm on Aug 31st, n.l. belardes posts "just read this blog by someone from New Orleans who survived by floating on his car..."

Yet you didn't post that particular bit of information until 12:23pm on Sept 1st.

What's the deal guys?

Mike Charles put the blogger’s point to rest since the person thought I had secret insider information as to Mike Charles floating on a car. If they could read they would have noticed that information is posted on the Mike Charles homepage for everyone to see, right in the profile section.

I found the Mike Charles blog early on off a link to a disaster site. Many who don’t know me, and who aren’t Internet junkies don’t realize my strong taste for Internet news. Remember, I was running news feeds off my site? My own spin on the valley news? I can’t believe people go and judge others like that…

I have contacted people during wars and major events. It’s one of my interests and a way to get up close to such. During the Fiji coup I wrote emails to UN folks involved. During the Yugoslavian war I corresponded with an English teacher from Novi Sad who wrote a journal from her basement. During the Second Intifada (still ongoing) I corresponded with a lot of Palestinians and got enough information for a book called Palestine Rising. Kids and adults wrote to me just what it’s like to live on occupied streets during Israeli occupation. During one of the skirmishes between Pakistan and India I corresponded with a General’s son. During the Iraqi war I wrote an essay distributed around the UN about the inherent nature of “Post-terrorized societies.”

I have taught a lot of college history. I have an interest in current events and I am gifted at data mining. Just the other day I corresponded with Lucas Graves. He wrote an article on "Grassroots Journalism" for Wired magazine. Wired magazine then contacted me in return and wants to publish a letter in their print version I wrote regarding bloggers, Lords of Bakersfield and such...

Hurricane Katrina is just one of the many global events I have had a strong interest in. Dragging my name into anything if you’re a skeptic just means you don’t know much about me or my interests… if you think I’m just some music gossip guy, then you have a shallow view of me…

But then, that’s just part of being a writer. There’s always skeptics who don’t want to believe anything you write.

On another interesting note. My spin on New Orleans seems to have a copycat at the New York Times. Someone on their staff with a strong historical interest either read my blog or decided a similar take was justified on New Orleans being an uncanny city of pestilence and war.
