The dream of Lostocean - By N.L. Belardes

I wasn’t at the Empty Space Theatre for the Rock Fu blast the other night, but I did hear a few stories, one of them being the dream of Lostocean. If you don’t know who Lostocean is, they’re an Indie band out of Bakersfield, California with a huge following on myspace.com/lostocean. Jeff Gray is the lead vocalist/guitarist. Christopher Short started the band and is their energetic drummer; Skyler Johnson is their virtuoso keyboardist—his ability to construct echoes of melodies in ambient chords is sheer delight on their recordings such as their new song, “Lights” and on songs from their masterful CD ‘Douse the Choir’, clearly one of the best recordings ever out of Bakersfield. If you doubt me, just go listen to their passionate textures of sounds. Brett Black is their bassist and he confided in a close friend of mine a dream he had about me.

Now, personally I haven’t heard from Lostocean in some time. They’re pretty wrapped up in their musical lives and I wouldn’t expect them to turn up at the Day of the Dead show to see my artwork unless I had my infamous Belardes barbacoa salsa and chips, and a recording executive there...

I don’t know much about this Brett dream really other than some dastardly folks in town would be happy to know that Brett dreamt I lost it all and ended up working at Walmart. In this subconscious delve into the wonderment of Brett he awoke remembering feeling sorry for me.

Maybe I worked in the shoe aisles.

Wouldn’t be the first time…

I'm going to go to sleep tonight blasting Lostocean tunes and force myself to dream they get a phat recording contract so they can quit their jobs, tour the universe in a big spaceship and send postcards. Listening to "Mute" right now. I dig it...
