Mystery photo archive unearthed! The Lebecs - By N.L. Belardes

Once again, I am posting some images from that mystery photographer from the past. I popped open the dusty trunk again and found clues to a band called The Lebecs. Now I did a little research on the Web but didn't find much. I'm sure lots of folks out there know lots about this band. I read on a Christian band site called Last of Us that the Lebecs CD was really good. They blasted the band on its live performance though...

Mostly what I found was lots and lots of lists of who the Lebecs toured around with. Google their name and you'll find out for yourself. One funny comment I found related to the Lebecs was an argument in a forum discussing band names like Flying Butt Monkey, or something like that. Anyway, one rather jealous post from 'arose1981' to a 'silentnick' (not me) read:

yeah nick thats great but you guys already took the cool menu name if we did it we would just be copy cats and I have never been a copy cat and don't plan to start now. I would like to use "The Lebecs" but some gay punk band from Bakersfield stole that name just because they saw the exit on the freeway. I should get to use the name not those retards. Maybe we could be "West Lebec" or "351 South Drive." How about "I 23". or "A3" or "Clarity" "The Strange Affliction" "Not Manufactured" "The Suburbians" or "An Arab/Italian Girl, An Irish Lady and a European Whore." "Firenze"
"frantic" "pandamonia""The Fondelers" "No Prezzo" "Del Pezelini Picilino" "Di Tommaso"
"The Preludes" "Le Piccolo Penne" or "Le Piccolo Cazzo" "who Nos" "The Spinsters" The Poopers" The Crappy Crap" "The Poo Flingers" "Down with Franchising"
"Stop Tearing Down the Mountains"

Does anybody have any good stories on this band? From my research it looked like they may have disbanded around 2002... not sure...

The members of the Lebecs still live and work in Bakersfield. Nick Gonzales (lead singer/guitarist), Dan Philips (bass guitarist/singer), and Andy Watts (guitarist/keyboards) all felt the tug of family life and each married their girlfriends and stopped touring. Dave Aiken (Lebecs drummer) still leads the Pangolese as you stated. Nick, Andy, and Dan have discussed playing and recording again but no definite plans have been formed yet. I hope they do play and record again. Their music was cool and their live performances were exciting to watch. A Fan.

When I was in High School from 97-2001 I loved that band. I would go to The Gate to watch them play and they were a lot of fun. I still have one of their cd's.

The first comment here isn't completely correct. The Lebecs stopped touring/playing/recording years before Andy got married. He in fact just had his one year anniversary a couple of months ago.

    Love,
    an ex-Lebec

The LEBECS are pretty much over. Nick is now in THE BLUFS with Phil from JOHNNY COME LATELY.

Each member of the band is still totally into writing and playing rad music. Nick is in the Blufs, and Andy watts and I play as a couple in a project we started called Citrus Party.
