The Rumor Mill - By N.L. Belardes

Just when you were licking your chops thinking there was more gossip in the music scene. Just when you thought you heard it all from Rob Ruiz and his cronies saying N.L. Belardes is a poison apple with an arch evil agenda to sell books, think again, this isn't about gossip at all and that old generation of Bakersfield music gone haywire with hate. This is about the new Bakersfield music scene, the new hardcore punk pop, kids with mohawks, but with an energy ala the Filthies, and even that California cowpunk band Sioux City Sarsaparilla, who all seem to want to build a rural rock punk movement in a non-destructive way, not like Bakersfield's population of angry punks.

In comes local band, Rumor, although I think they should be called, 'The Rumor', into the Bakersfield scene last night at Bakersfield's 'The Dome'... Threttsound was in the house slamming together the sound, excited to be helping out with such a budding high-energy Bakersfield band.

Lead man Keith has a tough-looking mohawk. That was the first thing I noticed when I entered the Dome. "That kid has one cool mohawk," I said to Matildakay. Of course I was thinking, I want a blue one, but I think Matildakay was reading my mind. Everyone I know including the War Days director, his brother, and all those Next Generation Punks in bands like Destination Unknown and Dirty Spanglish, would laugh me into next week were I to even try to pull such a stunt. I just looked the other way. It wasn't going to happen any time soon for me.

I didn't know what kind of music to expect. Screamo? Emo? Post Hardcore? Industrial hardcore slammin' angry youth pop? No, Rumor fired up and right away I heard influences of Bakersfield's rural rock punk styles. I heard power pop punk in the riffs and melodies. Why do I write about them in such a genre where I use the term 'pop'? Rumor may disagree. Keith and I might even have to sit and play checkers over this one but Rumor are just fun high-energy rockers with a screaming punk sound that had the crowd dancing and not slamming. They're catchy. Someone package these boys.

Throw these guys onto the radio, they have a sound that can reach and subvert the mainstream with their catchy upbeat power pop punk riffs...Kieth was all over the stage. Their guitarist with his Impeach Bush guitar was jumping around and tearing into the riffs...the kids in the audience were digging every note... what more can I say? That's it from the RUMOR mill...
