Near Miss Mallet hits N.L. on the head - By N.L. Belardes

I just went to a website and heard some tunes. Fellow blogger in crime New Leaves in March mentioned, in not so many words, that I had been a schleprock and not reviewed Near Miss Mallet's CD, Telephone to Girl in Glass Bathtub. Don't you just love that title?

I imagine lots of porcelain, hot water, bubbles and soft whispers in musical sounds...

I don't even remember hearing the name of the band. You'd think the mallet metaphor would have hit me sooner. Maybe I hadn't gone to see them thinking they were hardcore punk. After exposing some of the dark secrets of the pizza-a-go-go, I had avoided hardcore punk shows anywhere. Let me just set the record straight. Near Miss Mallet is not a punk band. They're nowhere close to being a punk band. I just toured Melissa and Brock Wiggins site and myspace and let me tell you they are a thought-rock band who needs to be pondered. Get their CD and spin it...

They're sold at Borders! While picking up a copy don't forget a copy of Lords: Part One. We artists need you to support us. Do you want the music scene and the literary arts to flourish? Then go kick in some cash on some music and a book today... read and listen. What could be better?

While I might not be as entrenched in the local music scene as you, by the shear amount of music I've amassed so far, I like to think that I know what's good and Near Miss Mallet is good. On my list of things to do before moving away from Bakersfield is to see them play one more time (as well as the Dalloways).

Now that sounds like a good show: Near Miss Mallet and the Dalloways... they should play down at the new Syndicate... a lovely bar...

I love Near Miss Mallet! I asked them to play at my art opening a couple years ago. Then they asked me if I could do an encaustic piece for their album. So, check out the image of the telephone and the bunny on the back! It is great when artists of all kinds can work together. They even played and sang in my art studio while I put some finishing touches on the artwork.

    Great music and great people!
