Pop Rock band Rocket in Bakersfield - By N.L. Belardes

Pop rock is not dead.

It rocketed into Bakersfield Saturday night, right into the land of Korn and Buck Owens and his big crystal horse.

For a moment, just set aside your working class Bakersfield rock angst.

Yes, Bakersfield is the land of angry rock, but that doesn’t mean pop rock is dead or even close to it. Enter LA band, Rocket who dove into Bakersfield’s Latino marketplace of Montgomery World Plaza to sing their catchy tunes to a pre-Halloween crowd.

Sure, there were a lot of bands on hand, but right now I want to just focus for a moment on what’s very difficult in today’s male-driven rock and roll marketplace: an all-female band…

No, it’s never easy to be in a band. And it’s not easy to sing pop rock when most bands think rock and roll is about screaming your guts out and singing about topics as dark as my own angst-filled Lords novel.

Forget that the 80s are gone. Quit crying about it and quit listening to the replays of the Human League and take a look at Rocket. These pop junk ladies will inject you with their Eighties Revival just like they did me and it isn’t because they’re cute. It’s because they’re good at what they do. They play tight, with the energy of pop bands of yesteryear with a new postmodern spin and an all-ladies feel that’s much tougher and a whole lot more fun than those plastic Go-Go’s who I grew up with; and they even have fun while they’re doing it… Lauren Rocket is the singer and she jammed with a little electro-keyboard in her sailor suit. After their set she hung out with her bandmates while Outline took the stage… they all danced and genuinely supported the scene…

Thanks to Lauren Rocket for the email… oh yes, she even has a blog. Maybe they should be the first LA band on thebuzzblogs.com
