Is the 2005 Bakersfield band of the year who you thought it would be? - By N.L. Belardes

There are few bands who could easily qualify as Bakersfield band of the year: The Filthies, Mento Buru, Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers, and American Standard.

The Filthies are a great band who takes risks. They played the Rabobank with their hockey song and consistently perform entertaining shows to adoring fans. Their blend of rural rock punk from here in the Southern San Joaquin has an incredible sound that is a blessing for the Bakersfield music scene. I believe their new CD in 2006, upcoming new website, and their hockey song are going to take them to great places.

Mento Buru plays lengthy shows with a band full of talented artists who all deserve to be in signed bands. Led by Matt Munoz for more than 15 years, Mento Buru is one of very few Bakersfield band who consistently get paid at every gig for their incredible Latino ska. We can expect great music to come from them in 2006, hopefully some new tunes, and many many exciting shows that gets crowds dancing and singing. I heard their New Year’s show was quite the gig.

Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers, like Mento Buru, performs marathon shows to tourists and locals at the world famous Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. They have performed more than 50 times at the Crystal Palace where Elvis’ old silver dollar car sits. Their music is not some kind of washed up country, but a blend of Latino-influenced high-powered rockabilly/country that often, like Mento Buru, packs the dance floor. They are coming out with an incredible CD in 2006 that is a tribute to the Bakersfield Sound. That CD alone will put Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers on the map and could very well take them to Nashville. Their two contributions to the Growing Up Fighting: Bakersfield Hockey Vol. 1.

American Standard is an incredible metal band with as much music experience as any of the previously mentioned bands. They came out with a CD in 2005 that is high-quality metal chaos in roaring riffs that are just as catchy to metal fans as any of the previous mentioned bands are to their genres. And they impacted the scene bigtime. American Standard didn’t just launch a great CD in 2005, they launched an incredible band name with rocking T-shirts that everyone digs and put on monumental metal shows. Marc DeLeon is a legend in Bakersfield rock going way back to Burning Image. I’m not sure if he put American Standard together, but he is definitely a force in music that helped get his band a nationally tour with Adema that took them in 2005 to New York, Buffalo, Cleveland, Hartford, Chicago, Seattle, Portland and more… This is one local band on the verge of getting signed with a major label and deserves to be recognized. I expect huge success from American Standard in 2006 and am proud to announce them as Bakersfield's band of the year on nlbelardes.com.

Right on!! American Standard truly deserves the award!

I remember seeing them for the first time at Hurrican Relief at The Dome. I swear the singer's voice could remove bark off trees. So fucking intense!!

    "RRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRR!!!"

Hell yeah! Shout out to the De Leon!
