Howard has a temper... - By N.L. Belardes

Oh yes he does...

Neither I nor anybody else at the Californian invented the phrase "journalism as a conversation." That actually comes from Dan Gilmore, one of the formost experts on participatory journalism, of which blogs are just one part, and has been embraced as a concept by bloggers across the blogosphere.

You don't like the idea, fine. I think it's a good idea.

I'm not in the least involved in editorial decisions. I just through out an idea because it sounds like a good idea to me. I see you and other local music people bitching about the lack of local music coverage in TBC. Well, here's one way for you to do something about it. That's all I'm saying. You don't want to, that's fine.

Bitching about coverage? I thought I was just pointing out the lack of entertainment reporting... It's a sweet gesture, Howie. It really is. But why should I have to do the Californian's job... without pay?

Doing some research I can see that 'participatory journalism' is a bigger issue that I need to look into further. But don't forget my main point: it's rape if big media uses any writing without paying the writer... (Personally with my blog on the Californian I had books to sell so I looked at being a part of their community as a free ad. That was probably wrong of me). Besides, who would want to write for free for the Californian after what happened to me? There is a control element. Maybe if I hadn't badmouthed a certain employee I would still be in the Californian's blog club and not labeled as a bully (hilarious)... who wants to help the Californian do their job if just shoved into a revolving door where bloggers have to wear fake smiles as they are doing the Californian's job...to report all the news, including news regarding great literary works about corrupt media, Bakersfield bands, and about engaging local art and theatre...?

But then if the Californian is paying... go for it Mike, Matildakay, Baketown, Illpressed, Black Dog...

Notice I didn't edit Howard's Letter to the Editor

Did Howard not notice he used the wrong "through" in his letter to you? And he didn't capitalize his own name at the end? Aren't journalists supposed to watch all that grammatical, spelling and crap in between all that complaining and pushing of their views? Or are they too busy trying to find other people's work to reference (steal) as their own when writing articles, blogs or whatever they want to call their work?

I think "conversational journalism" is just another proof of the failing of the paper. I think of it this way- The paper has an obligation to cover and support wholeheartedly the community at large. Between the events generated by the art community, as well as business, law, and other general happenstance, there should be plenty to fill the newspaper. However, the paper is filled with many articles about world and country events written by the Associated Press; such things that anyone can find online or by flipping to a TV station. The world and country have the luxury of expanded debate and attention to their events. Bakersfield doesn't have such a luxury. The paper fails to see this, and insults the community of people who actually cover these events. Honestly, who needs a paper?

Maybe he's a reporter from the community. A citizen reporter. You know... they're not trained like the rest of those fancy shmancy reporters. LIke the ones that plagiarize articles for years on end.

Conversational journalism...hmmm...Let's look at that phrase. When I enter into a "conversation" with someone I don't expect them to stick their fingers in their ears and start chanting "la-la-la-la..." A conversation is a two-way street, unedited and uncensored. The Californian censored NL. They edit what appears on their blog. Personally if someone censors me in a "conversation" I don't consider it a conversation any longer. The Californian has a long legacy of printing what they thought people should read. They also have a legacy of attacking any competition and doing their best to run them out of town. They also don't want to give credit where credit is due. They are not advocates of free speech. They are advocates of their own views. Nothing more. And, after reading Howard's reply I can see they are only concerned with PC as long as they are criticizing someone else. You can see by his tone, "music people bitching," that really doesn't give a crap about "music people." I wonder what he does give a crap about...other than getting someone else to do his job for him while he collects the paycheck that is?
