2nd letter from Roger Mathey on Kevan Klawitter's passing - By N.L. Belardes

Director Roger Mathey of the Spotlight Theatre sent this letter out yesterday on Kevan Klawitter's passing:

Kevan Klawitter died today.

Many of us knew Kevan as a flamboyant man with an over the top approach to life. He was always getting out there with his art. He acted, designed, directed, produced. He worked in all the the theatres around town, from the Empty Space to the Spotlight to Bakersfield Community Theatre.

He had been diagnosed with cancer late last year. You know the type of cancer that can be treated? That wasn't the type Kevan had.

But even after being diagnosed and given treatment and told he would not recover, told that his days were numbered, he still fought on.

He acted in The Bad Seed after he was told he had cancer. A cancer that was spreading throughout his body. He pitched a show to the Empty Space, "Die, Mommy, Die"... a piece which is him, through and through.

It was Kevan who directed "Wait Until Dark" at the Spotlight, a show that lost it's leading lady on opening week but managed to find a way to still get the show up, living the oldest and most reverant of theatre credos to its utmost... the show must go on, even with a new lead.

It was Kevan who brought the enormously successful "Rocky Horror Show" to the normally conservative Bakersfield Community Theatre, taking a risk that only he would, and creating a show that sold out every one of its performances.

Kevan played bit parts, built sets, painted, did everything he could for theatre and would always help when called upon. His ego was never an issue. He just wanted to do the thing he loved.

Last week he was told he had days to live.

Today, those days ended.

I received a number of calls telling me about Kevan's passing. A great number of people who cared about him.

I am now letting you know.

A great spirit has left us.

And we must do all we can to fill the void.
