These images are from last May when Buck dedicated statues to country music legends. I remember he paid special tribute to Johnny Cash... it was a Bakersfield music legend moment...

Goodbye Johnny Cash...

    Today, a legend passed.....

Buck Owens, creator of the Bakersfield Sound, died in his sleep.

If you don't know, Buck Owens was one of the biggest reasons why Bakersfield is even on the map. Not only with his music, but locally, everything that he has contributed to our fine city, like The Crystal Palace and the famous Bakersfield Sign. Buck was Bakersfield, and Bakersfield was Buck.

I actually got to meet Buck once. One of my first jobs in radio was as a janitor at KUZZ. I worked there 3 days a week, 4 hours a day. My first assignment as janitor was to empty the trash in all the offices, including Buck's. It was a Saturday afternoon, and I was heading up to Buck's office, when I noticed that the door was open. I went inside and saw a man, wearing golf attire, with a baseball cap pulled down tight, and large sunglasses covering his face. I immediately confronted the stranger. "Excuse me, but who are you?!" The stranger looked me back in the eye, and asked me the same thing. I told him who I was, the janitor. He said, "Hi, I'm Buck" We shook hands, and I proceeded to take out the trash, pretending not to be star struck. He never looked down on me, never bossed me around, he just smiled, and continued doing whatever he was doing.

Preston and I want to send our deepest condolences to The Owens family, and to radio station KUZZ. You guys are in our thoughts and prayers.

    Thank you Buck!

Today is a sad day for us all with the loss of Buck Owens. We hope that you will continue to come to Buck Owens Crystal Palace and experience the legacy that he left for us all to enjoy. He was a generous and loving person who shared with us his music and life experiences. For those of us that knew him, we will especially miss him and speak of his memories for generation to come. He will be missed dearly.

Thanks for posting about Buck. I just called home to ole Bako & none of my family knew about this @ all.

It's a sad day in Bakersfield. I loathed his music as a teenager, but grew to appreciate it the older I got. His music reminds me of my childhood. I'd see his car with the fake guns on it, parked on Chester Ave. across from my school everyday. Then seeing him every year @ the rodeo @ the fairground, good times!
