Rocky Nash and thousands of Bobbleheads get together for madcap hockey game - By N.L. Belardes

Oh yes, the Condors are going to the playoffs, even after a dismal loss the other night to the Stockton Thunder, er, bumblebees. You know the blog entry, the one where I wrote the only good Stockton Bumblebee is a squashed Stockton Bumblebee? Yeah, that’s it. Well last night was the Phoenix Roadkill. They call themselves the Phoenix Roadrunners, but we all know there’s only one true Roadrunner team, even if CSU Bakersfield is lame for not having football or hockey programs.

Band night had been a long lucky streak with the Bakersfield Condors going 5-0 before hitting a 1-3 losing streak. That all changed last night with the Phoenix team looking like Wile E. Coyote finally caught his bird (only after a steamroller called the Condors crushed the “Meep Meep!” right out of the little flattened feller). That means the Condors are 7-3 on band nights with bands playing to more than 65,000 of the rowdiest hockey fans ever created. Oh bless my soul, please support and purchase the hockey CD now. Noveltown needs you.

Beat the #@$@%!! out of 'em!

Although bands nights may not stay forever, the lingering festiveness of hockey band nights in Bakersfield will not soon be forgotten. I get people coming up to me at games, appreciative of bands and the fun atmosphere created during first intermission rough and tumble hockey band moments.

Last night was no exception. 6,536 people were on hand to get their free St. Jacques Bobblehead doll, watch the Condors slip into the playoffs and enjoy the festive air of hockey, hockey bands, beer and good concession stand food.

Oh and those bobbleheads were all lined up!

And don't forget big fights in jumbotron action moments!

Steve from My Dysfunctional Me was on-hand to help with sound as Rocky Nash performed their percussion intro and song “Bobblehead”. What else could you ask for other than a victory, which the Condors got.

I do have to say the most mysterious moment of the night wasn’t what sexy outfit Rocky was going to wear to the game. She was lovely as usual and I did declare my love for her right in front of Preston Nash (who threatened to toss me into the crowd for such drooling behavior). Ahhh Venice…

Ooo la la...!

Anyway, the most mysterious part of the night was the strangest sports moment in all of my years when Condor mascot Baby Cal gave me a big hug and whispered in my ear to ask about the band. The mascot then doted over Rocky and Preston’s cute kids who sat on the Condor couch with their Bobbleheads.

In all my years I always thought mouths were taped shut inside those costumes. None to worry. I was the only one who heard.

It just felt strange to hear a big fluffy bird talk to me…

I mean, what’s this world coming to??

Here’s more pics from the night:

What, Rocky? What?
