Bakersfield protest: The dance of Gonzalo Santos: Lo bailado y marchado no nos lo quita nadie! - By N.L. Belardes

I have been emailing Dr. Gonzalo Santos as I post my entries to the protests. He's a CSU Bakersfield sociology professor who speaks up for struggles of migrant farm workers. You will recognize him as one of the leaders of the recent anti-HR4437 protests. (Read more)

Gonzalo is a big supporter of nlbelardes.com and has a few corrections for my recent write-ups that gets to the truth about his spontaneous dance on the protest stage at Jastro Park....

Hola Nick,

Great series! Wonderful pictures, warm and intimately personal chronicle. Your idea to create a clearinghouse of links on the immigration issue for use by students and others is excellent - I'll certainly use it in my classes!

One detail, if I may correct you on something: the dancing with Nicole was preceded by my utterly spontaneous decision to dance on stage with Dolores, as the stage folks kept up the celebration of her birthday with a great ranchera melody after they played her Las MaƱanitas. I thought: "why not?" and just pulled her to the front and started dancing. Then I thought after a while, "well, let's get Nicole in too, with her dad." So I took Dolores back, pulled Nicole out, and after a little dancing "passed" her to her dad - to everyone's pleasant surprise!

Photo included, if you want to insert it.

My wife sometimes accuses me of overplanning and not learning to be spontaneous enough. So you see, I'm working at it!

Recibe un afectuoso saludo,

Gonzalo Santos
