The Ghost of Buck Owens at the Crystal Palace? - By N.L. Belardes

The story of Buck Owens isn’t soon coming to a close. I’ve been reading through a history manuscript for a Buck Owens’ and Bakersfield Sound history book, and will be talking to the Buckaroos’ drummer again for more on the night Buck Owens died.

I didn’t attend the funeral at Valley Baptist church. So many people and media were on hand that I just didn’t feel right being some kind of Paparazzi for the dead. I covered the week leading up to the funeral and attended the viewing with a unique write-up from a novelist eye perspective.

This past weekend marked one week since the funeral. Earlier in the week the Crystal Palace re-opened after a short closure with a free morning concert by Clint Black. Then on Friday and Saturday night, the Crystal Palace had its first official weekend without Buck.

I arrived Saturday night to snap a few photos. I thought about the mysterious story Dave Wulfekeuhler told me of Buck’s last night and wondered if the ghost of Buck was present. I missed seeing Dave as the Buckaroos performed before I arrived. Branded heart was onstage as Fatt Katt and the Vonzippers declined to play the Sardine Can over on Eye Street. I’m sure packing them in like fish is perfect for a rockabilly hipster like Fatt Katt. Hopefully he gobbled them up as big kitties do...

The Crystal Palace is still a great place to be and Buck is in every ounce of that place...
