Elizabeth Alan to make Bakersfield appearance for Morning Coffee novel - By N.L. Belardes

Chester Blum and Karen Luethke both live on opposite coasts and have the same creative knack for not just talking about writing, they actually create. And in unison. Both will be appearing at Bakersfield’s Barnes and Noble today at 7pm to promote their book, Morning Coffee.

Morning Coffee is romantic fiction, “a story about wanting to find someone to share the little things with” Karen said in a phone interview. “It’s a full-bodied romantic novel.”

I asked how long it took to write their dual-author novel. They met online and started with short stories. Around February, 2005 they had the beginning of a book with about 25-30 pages in a story about first love and not letting go. They finished in late July. That’s quick work.

“But why go with Authorhouse?” I asked Karen, a Central Valley writer from Clovis. Chester lives in New York. She indicated it was just plain rejection. That’s something we authors all face. The protocol is you send your work off to a bazillion potential publishers, then sit and wait while editors toil over your work, lose pages, spill coffee and use your novel for their bird cage floor. I’ve been in debates with Central Valley writer/editor Cindy Wathen who tells me that’s just not true, that it doesn’t matter if you don’t have a track record, or if you’re a first time author without an agent. If you think your work is good enough, then get it out there. Publishers will publish you if your work is good and if you have a handle on the idea of marketing.

But we’re in a new age of self-publishing, where authors can empower themselves as their own marketing experts with just a few hundred dollars and an online and media campaign. With good editors and fancy cover artwork and reviews, authors can get their work out to people in small bursts of promotion.

“We sent our work to one publishing house who said we didn’t have a handle on our genre. So we empowered ourselves,” Karen said. “And that didn’t seem so difficult to do because you have more courage with somebody else helping you.”

Karen is also an artist. She designed the coffee cup book cover in pencils and pastels…

I’m going to meet them today for real coffee… and see what else they have to say. Hopefully I can add a few photos to this write-up. In the meantime, please support valley writers whether they're self-published or with a traditional press.

I have read Morning Coffee and I highly recommend it. It's light, easy reading for a lazy summer's day. The writing draws you in and you catch yourself rooting for the characters.

Thanks for your support of valley authors. I've read "Morning Coffee" and enjoyed it so much. My favorite books are Romance books, and I enjoyed "Morning Coffee" as much as I've enjoyed books by Nora Roberts and Barbara Delinsky. Elizabeth Alan has done a wonderful job with a fantastic storyline. I highly recommend it. "Whats better than love?"

This was a really good book, very impressive for a first novel. The story seemed to flow easily, which made for a quick, satisfying read. I highly recommend picking this one up to read this summer.

Readers can check out more on the subject when I attended a Valley Writers Conference in Merced in April of this year...

One question that I will ask today is whether the work is romantic comedy or not. I had someone ask me this morning. I wasn't sure. Is Morning Coffee funny like a Nick Hornby novel, or is it more light-hearted and dramatic...?

Who are the anonymous peeps leaving messages...?? Norma? No, it couldn't be you... :)

I am an anonymous poster. Since I am not a registered user of this blog

I would categorize this novel as light hearted and romantic but I am not familar with the writings of Nick Hornby

hahahahahaah Ok Nick. You're on to me. JK.... I am THE original Norma with a capital N. Got that! LOL Funny thing is, my initial are N.L. so everytime I see YOUR posts I think to myself, "I don't remember posting that?"

I LOVED this book! I could not put it down and found myself lost in the characters world as I was reading it! That's a HUGE compliment because I rarely read fiction and I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It's a MUST read!

Quoting Chet's email to me: "The signing in Bakersfield went as well as could be expected considering we don't know anyone there - - we had a real good time"

I'm just sorry I couldn't be there to support my Valley friend, Karen. We were off camping with family and friends up at Hume Lake that weekend. I still hope some of you go out and buy the book. You won't be sorry!

As the co-author of Morning Coffee by Elizabeth Alan ( a combination of our middle names )I thought I'd drop in and post what has taken place lately regarding the book.

First, for those of you who don't know our story I'll be brief. My co-author and I met on a message board for reality tv. We became friendly, discovered we have a creative connection, wrote a few short stories together, and then somehow got the notion we could write a book together. The interesting thing is she lives in CA and I live in NY. We wrote the book entirely via emails back and forth over the Internet.

My co-author Karen and I enjoyed our latest book signings in California on Friday May 12th in Bakersfield and Saturday May 13th in Fresno. Both went well and we had a great time.

Right after the book signings we went to the Book Expo America that was held in Washington DC. from Friday May 19th through Sunday May 21st. It's not a book fair where you sell your book but more a place where you try to make contacts that can help propel the book further. We had our own booth and got to meet some very interesting people who hopefully we'll stay in contact with and use their expertises to get the book out there more than it already is.

Google had a booth there and we went and talked to them. We left them one of our books and we will be able to be found on Google in approximately two months. They scan the book and use keywords that people search for. So if someone say is looking for something regarding COFFEE we'll show up. If someone is looking for ROMANCE BOOKS we'll show up. There will be lots of ways for the book to show up. It was quite fascinating.

In addition on one of my out and about journeys seeing who was there I came upon this interesting booth. It's called Inside Success Radio - www.insidesuccessradio.com . After talking to the head of the booth for a few minutes I told him I had a co-author and I went and got Karen and we both went back together to talk to him. Basically what they do is they designed a webpage for us so Karen and I now have a webpage which includes our picture. It's not up and running yet but will be shortly. They first have to call us and interview us so that our story will be on their site and people that come to the site can read all about us and the book. This is also tied to Google and will be able to be googled when finished.

We're also going to submit our book to an EBook Store. So the book will be available in a Digital Book Store where it can be downloaded to be read right off your computer or even an ipod. We'll also give them links to our domain page and webpage so people can read about us and the book.

On Sunday Karen and I were at the 10 - 11 autographing session signing our book. It was very cool to have people on line waiting to have our book signed by us. Most of the people who came to see us had read about the book in the directory and found it interesting enough to come see us. We pretty much talked to everyone telling them how we met and wrote the book. For the most part everyone found this fascinating. It was very surreal. For an hour it was like being a celebrity.

Since returning from the Book Expo we were contacted by one of the people we met. He's a publicist who found our story very interesting and wants to represent us and run a campaign for us to get Karen and I out there which will promote the book. Not knowing who he was I asked him for references to people he's represented in the past and one of the people he's promoted is a gentleman by the name of Thomas Sawyer. He was the head writer for Murder She Wrote and wrote 24 of the episodes himself. He's also been nominated for an emmy and has written 9 tv pilots. He raved about this publicist calling him the best in the business, and he contacted us. We have a business lunch scheduled with him for Thursday June 22nd. We'll see what happens.
