Wake at the Fish Fry features former Big House members and roadies - By N.L. Belardes
Big House, a country/blues band featuring Monty Byrom, once had a string of hits, a big contract, three albums and many big tours. The death of a close friend of the now defunct band—also a relative of the roadies of Bighouse—meant for a night of reflection and music remembrance.

Monty Byrom and friends...
Inside I saw Monty’s publicist Melanie, and she reminded me the night was a sort of wake. Right away I saw Monty in sandals jamming with former members of Big House, including Chuck Seaton,Tanner Byrom, and Ron Mitchell. It was supposed to be ‘Open Mic Night’ at Fishlips on 18th Street. Jared Pope also helped drum along with members of the Stumbaugh family.

Forget ‘Open Mic Night’. This night was closed to any performers except the grievers who needed an outlet to express themselves and their love for a lost family member.

I stayed and listened to Monty Byrom and friends, and then an entire family that included two of his ex-roadies. Matildakay hung out and Monty even came over for a moment. “Their mother kicked me off the stage,” he laughed, gesturing to his ex-roadies. He had graciously left the stage so that only the deceased family could play some tunes. Who could complain about that?

Monty drifted into the crowd as he always does while I said hello to Paul Cartwright and local actress Suzanne Schmedding who can talk in the most hilarious fake Scottish voice…
