Central Valley Poet T.Z. Hernandez to perform in Noveltown 'Stories From Dust' literary event at Russo's Books - By N.L. Belardes
Matildakay has a new blog she’s writing just for Noveltown. She’s put her narrative chick flick spin on promotional writing, and it’s hilarious. Check out her first issue, titled, “Noveltown partners with BIFF”. She wrote the goods about the June 23-24th Bakersfield independent film event that was just held at the Spotlight Theatre. She’s about to post another on Wednesday’s literary/poetry event, “Stories from Dust” (June 28th) that’s being put on by Noveltown and is supported by Poets & Writers Inc., Bakotopia, MÁS Magazine, Russo's Poets, Russo's Books, and Cerro Coso's Metamorphoses Journal. That’s at Russo’s Books in the Marketplace from 7-9 PM and features T.Z. Hernandez, storytelling, Matt Munoz of Mento Buru with song and storytelling, poets galore, and more.

Heyday Books literary/poets workshop in Merced

T.Z. Hernandez
Although I was sad to miss the recent Chicana Book Club Ana Castillo event, and it was probably pretty cool, T.Z. Hernandez is coming to town. (read Castillo's blog, she writes about Bakersfield)
Tim Z. Hernandez is a performance artist and poet. He grew up at various places in the Central Valley but now resides in Colorado. You can read all about him in this week’s edition of MÁS Magazine where he granted them a cool interview ("Writer to Share Central Valley Experiences Through Poetry")

Get to know T.Z.
As for me, I first met T.Z. at the Great Valley Books Writers Conference in Merced, California (Hear about the event on the Buck City Podcast #34. Includes an interview with T.Z.). He was giving a poetry workshop at the Merced Cultural Arts Center. I sat in his workshop and learned about how T.Z. interprets the space around to write what he sometimes calls the non-poem. He had his class do the same… they wandered outside to experiment with their levels of awareness. They thought and reached with their entire bodies into surrounding space to feel and experience what they could put into words. It was a blessing of an experience and I’m sure you will get even more from T.Z while he performs in Bakersfield with a poem or two from his Heyday Books title, Skin Tax.

Reflecting on an anyday poetic experience

Music and poetry and thought
Support the arts and come June 28th, this Wednesday to Russo's at the Marketplace and meet T.Z. Hernandez and other local artists. Copies of the inaugural Metamorphoses will be given away and you can purchase copies of Skin Tax as well as the Russo's Poets book, "On Any Given Wednesday" (poets will be performing from this group!)

What is your poetry and literary awareness?
And you can even get a copy of Lords: Part One. Unless you don't like scary books about Bakersfield...

so exciting! i know i'll be there!
I can't wait! It's going to be soooo inspiring...
You know, when I decided to go to this event, I thought it would be "fun". Inspiring wasn't even in my thoughts. But WOW. Matildakay... you were right on. Not only was it fun. It WAS very inspirational. From nlbelardes reading an excerpt of his e-book, Thick White Crust, to Matt and Mento Buru, to the Russo's poets(I will definitely be going to one of their Wednesday poetry readings!... and then in the end.... Mr. Hernandez. What a GREAT, motivated, exciting reading. Last nights event really rocked my world. (wow... did I just say that out loud?) Who knew so many different styles of writing could touch my soul the same? The guy from MAS Magazine... sorry I forget his name? He really "took me back" to when I was little and my dad would recite poetry to us. I vaguely remember ONE poem he taught us when we were little. Something about a "rose and it's thorns" Anyways... everybody was great. But of course there were my "favorite moments". I had my teenagers with me, as well as my 6 and 7 year olds, and even THEY had a favorite moment from last night. The little ones loved Mr. Hernandez, my teens rocked out to Mento Buru and of course, I am a big belardes fan.. so his reading was MY favorite part. Well, chingpea's presentation of the books and flyers on the table was a close second! hahaha. Chingpea... you would make a Vanna White! You and Matildakay did a great job representing noveltown! :) I hope you guys decide to do something like this again. I know I'll definitely be there!
I showed up for this event for about an hour to catch what I could. The event was way more than I thought it would be... extremely inspirational. It was so moving to hear poetry to music. I wish I could have heard Tim, but had to go. Will you be posting anything about the outcome of this event? I'm curious to know what your take of it was. BTW, you were an incredible host and your passage was also quite moving. AND, to finally see Matildakay and Chingpea in person - WOW - I was so taken that I couldn't even bring myself to approach them to ask when the next episode of Smalltown Girls would be. They both work for Noveltown? I wonder if they'll ever be back. Matildakay, as you say in your soundbite in the intro of STG, "YOU'RE SO HOT!"
Keith, You're right on! I was at the event too for most of it. Very inspirational - I didn't expect it to last so long - I felt bad I had to leave when Tim just started presenting. I stayed for one of his readings, he's pretty awesome. Even picked up one of his books as I left. NL, the piece you read was a tearjerker. Though I didn't have as rough a childhood, I could feel the anguish. Quite moving... saw a woman in the audience just crying! I picked up a copy of Lords, but the passage you read was from a different book? Is that published too? I can't remember the title. Mento Buru was great as always and the ladies at the table were a pleasure to talk to. Thanks, Chingpea for directing me to NL's blog and letting me know a little bit more about Noveltown. BTW, I love your endless smile and energy and I can't believe you're as old as claim to be. Anyway, I hope you have more events like this. It's about time Bakersfield has stuff like this happening. Some of us youth don't like just barhopping... we like to feed our minds too (for the most part).
Rumor has it you and Matt are going to put something like this together again soon? How soon? Where? When? Matt started saying something about it, but I had to leave. It was late and my babies needed to get home before they turned into pumpkins.
