Hezbollah in Bakersfield? - By N.L. Belardes

A young Israeli soldier gets captured. The kid isn’t even old enough to drink alcohol in America. The situation turns even more sour as Israel soldiers are killed and more captured. Eventually the Bush administration gives the go ahead for Israel to give a less than gentle response by pounding Lebanon’s infrastructure.

Why? Was this a situation the American government was waiting to happen? Finally, a situation that could potentially embarrass Iran? Forget about Israel and Lebanon for half a second. Iran had just been threatening Israel at the U.N. And Americans at home have been bitching about the price of gasoline. Could this all be orchestrated to make Iran look like a Hitler about ready to strike, or a new war for oil and supremacy?

Hezbollah: Iranian-funded.

Iran: seeking nuclear energy and calling Israelis, Nazis.

An Iranian drone hits an Israeli ship. An Iranian-made missile is shot down over Israel. Embarrassment for Iran and the manufacturers of a rocket that didn’t reach its destination? Sure. Orchestrated in an Iranian hate campaign because they are the new world threat?

Possibly. Doesn’t America want to skewer the heart of terrorism? Or at least make it appear so? Remember, weapons of mass destruction?

It’s coming to a skewering of more-than-Saddam proportions. In the meantime, and if that happens, be prepared for war on your street. And don’t expect the hero of Smallville to come and help you if Hezbollah are in Bakersfield.

Bakersfield? Why not? The Washington Times in 2005 published an article titled, “Hezbollah in America.” That would be ‘in America’ not outside of our borders. And we now have Hezbollah threatening American interests with 1,700 fighters—who could be anywhere on the planet, and have been daring America to ignite World War Three. They say they’re ready.

Yes, now is the time to make sure your neighbors are who they say they are.

One more spark in the conflict in the Middle East and the Hezbollah are coming. Yes. Be ready. Iran spends at least $100 million a year to shine the bombs that Hezbollah has targeted for innocent Americans for years. They’ve been waiting. Those would be called sleeper cells. And yes, though I cried recently that illegal immigrants need rights, I was never talking about the terrorist organizations that lurk American streets, that creep and plot and make the Lords of Bakersfield look like little monkeys scavenging on war-torn streets.

Not afraid yet?

When I lived in Las Vegas I used to take students to look at some of the cool artwork in the local Clark County Library System. Where do you think Al Qaeda was seen studying when they weren’t in girly bars, living up their last few days of hedonistic life on Earth?

Oh, and I lived right around the corner from those girly bars.

And I also worked right around the corner from those girly bars… I guess they didn’t want to blow up symbols of their own decadence and weakness. Besides, Hezbollah might be on the Strip right now—up in their hotel rooms with hookers and whiskey—or down in the girly bars just to watch… kind of what they always do—just watching and lurking until their moment comes. Is their moment almost here?

Still don’t believe me? Here’s an excerpt from the article from the Washington Times I mentioned:

Although the organization has yet to launch an attack on U.S. soil, its U.S. activities are far from benign. Its work in this country has two major purposes: One is to raise money and smuggle arms to Hezbollah fighters, often by criminal activities ranging from credit-card fraud to cigarette smuggling; and the other is to conduct surveillance behind enemy lines, with a possible eye toward launching attacks on U.S. targets in the event of an armed conflict between the United States and Tehran. Like his backers in Iran, Hezbollah boss Hassan Nasrallah routinely denounces the United States and Israel as his organization's main enemies. Given the events of September 11, and given Hezbollah's own record of kidnapping, torturing and killing Americans when it has had the opportunity, we ignore the group's operations in this country at our peril.

Outside of metropolitan Detroit, last month's arrest of Nemr Ali Rahal, a 41-year-old businessman, at his Dearborn home on charges of smuggling funds to Hezbollah, went largely unreported by the news media around the United States. But the story deserves our attention. In Mr. Rahal's house, agents found a videotape of a Hezbollah rally he attended in Lebanon three years ago. The FBI said it found $600 worth of change in buckets in the Rahal home, and that he said the money was meant to go to "orphans" -- the children of suicide bombers. Mr. Rahal has been charged with stealing more than $400,000 by means of credit-card fraud. When Mr. Rahal returned Feb. 9 from a trip to Canada, Customs agents found traces of explosives on his passport.

In March, Mahmoud Kourani of Dearborn pleaded guilty to providing material support for Hezbollah. He will be sentenced next month. Kourani (whose brother is Hezbollah's chief of military security in southern Lebanon) is an illegal alien who sneaked into the United States from Mexico in February 2001. Federal authorities have repeatedly arrested suspected Hezbollah operatives for attempting to smuggle night-vision goggles and other military equipment to the organization. One suspect, arrested in 1998, skipped bail and fled to Lebanon before returning to the United States last year to face federal charges. In 2003, a federal court convicted a Hezbollah cell based in Charlotte, N.C., on charges of aiding Hezbollah by operating a cigarette-smuggling ring. The leader of that group, Mohammed Hammoud, received 155 years in prison.

Do you think these people haven’t been replaced with new red-eyed terrorists? And do you think for a moment that Bakersfield wouldn’t be a target, or that this conflict regardless of how America is making Iran look to an international audience, can’t affect you in your comfy computer chair? Think again.

Oh boy! That is seriously scary! Even scarier that its real...

Thanks for opening my eyes to what's going on...

what a wake up call! that's scary to think about but we do have to realize that anything can happen anytime...

I agree that Bakersfield, if not Kern County could be a strategic target for terrorism. With all the organic produce not to mention the huge underground oil reserves in the area. A hit here could create quite a rift in the country's economy.

America hasn't had war on its soil since what? The Civil War? I don't know, but if this means World War III, then I think it's about time it's our turn to get blasted here on our own grounds. Not that I would want that. Or anyone else for that matter...

    I vote N.L. for PRESIDENT!

  7. Blogger Rob Shock | 8:58 PM |

Our only true enemy is fear, and it's become a very powerful weapon lately. If we're not careful, it will use our own hands to defeat us.

    That's very creepy...

Pearl Harbor and 9-11... battles on American soil.

Not sure I would want the job of President... I would curse a lot more into the microphones, that's for sure.

Neither Pearl Harbor or 9/11 were battles on American Soil. Pearl Harbor was bombed, the US took the initiative to the skies and sea, and eventually over to Japan and Europe where the battles were fought on their soil.

While there are obviously terror factions looming in every Smallville, USA, the exact reasoning some people gave for them possibly targeting Kern County is the same reason why I feel they wouldn't ever do so. New World Resources. Why would they destroy them? If nothing else, they'd attempt to gain control of them, and launder the profits for military purposes. These infamous terrorist groups are smart business people. Some would argue they are better at business and money relations than they are at wreaking havoc.

I think suggesting the idea that Hezbollah is in America, and it could be your next door neighbor, etc. is stretching the reality. A handful of cases in our HUGE country. While these cases are fact, what threat are they in the big picture? Not much of one in my opinion. Call me old school, but I think our society has lost the relationship between man and neighbor. Suggesting such fear-mongering things can only do harm to an already scared nation.

As for Hezbollah and its current predicament w/ Israel/US. Israel seemed to use the reasoning of Lebanon harboring Hezbollah to justify bombing all escape routes. Where does that leave the majority of innocent Lebanon citizens and innocent travellers? Some sick idea of genocide thought up on Sharon's deathbed? Perhaps unfulfilled wishes from the 80s invasion? And to think there's a war being fought where both sides are using American supplied artillary. How odd is it that we can supply both our enemies and allies with weaponry, but we still need China to make our flags?

I recommend everyone study up on Reagan's war history and tactics to get a good idea of how Bush might handle this situation.

  11. Blogger n.l. | 11:06 AM |

My perspective is: 9-11 and Pearl Harbor were battles. Sure they were surprise attacks, but I'd like you to walk up to a Pearl Harbor Veteran or someone from the NYPD who was at 9-11 and say, "Excuse me, but you were not in a battle."

Bullshit. You'd be laughed out of your shoes, or punched out of them for your definition of a battle.

And if you choose to ignore my Chicken Little blog post about the sky falling, at least I'm brave enough to say the threat exists, while many are just happy to stand around like happy little worker bees in a civilized land where... oh wait... 9-11s don't exist?

  12. Blogger n.l. | 11:14 AM |

By the way, Oliver Stone's new movie: World Trade Center is being modeled after good solid war films... it's a war movie about a day of battle, only the uniforms are those from everyday life...

The battle of 9-11 was against terror and fought by citizen soldiers. The enemy that day was invisible. To fight such takes integrity, determination, willpower, and a swallowing of fear to fight such battles of survival, rescue and heroism. And that happened on American soil.

Mike, you need to read some John Keegan. He's a real citizen soldier... one of the finest ever, yet he has never picked up a sword other than his pen... and he has trained thousands of soldiers.

Sometimes battles and soldiers are not some stereotype from a textbook...

  13. Blogger n.l. | 11:23 AM |

I do think Mike is right on about weaponry... there are ironies abounding... though I also think resources are naturally attacked during war-time... cut-off supplies, make life difficult for your enemies, etc...

Why do Arabs burn oil fields? Lots of reasons...

  14. Anonymous Mike C. | 11:58 AM |

It's definately semantics, but while I agree 9/11 and Pearl Harbor were attacks and acts of war, I don't really think they fit the definition of a battle. Especially when 'on our turf' is used. That implies a land attack and response from both parties.

  15. Anonymous Mike C. | 2:25 PM |

While I understand the reasoning to disable countries of their natural resources, I'm not sure it would really apply to Kern County. The only way disabling our oil would break us is if there was also a block on foreign oil transactions. The Middle East has figured out by now that restricting sales/trade with America for oil does all the damage necessary to hinder our daily lives and business.

  16. Blogger black dog | 4:36 PM |

I totally agree with the satement, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."

I'm tired of being held captive by threats of terrorism on our soil, I wish the friggin cowards would just bring it on and come out into the light so we can kick their asses and get on with life. Where is our FDR?! I'd even settle for a LBJ...

  17. Blogger dw | 11:45 PM |

fight for peace...fight for war...I guess the bottom line is, humans like to fight...

  18. Anonymous Mike C | 7:49 PM |

I'm going to take a guess and say Israeli war measures will be heavily increased as soon as the 8,000 Americans evacuate Lebanon. Strange timing it'll be indeed, but it's bound to happen, unless Hezbollah cease fire...which is highly unlikely.

  19. Anonymous Mike C | 7:22 PM |

regarding blackdog's comments about the terrorists being cowards, and needing to step out into the light so there can be a true fight...I've always wondered about that argument. Isn't the definition of a good/smart fight to do it in the most covert manner? I believe we firebombed Japan in the middle of the night. We also have unmanned planes carrying weapons that we control robotically. Would you say that's coward-like? Gone are the days of hand to hand battle. I'm not saying those terrorists aren't cowards, but I'm not sure I agree w/ that reasoning, given our own past.

  20. Blogger black dog | 4:05 PM |

Sure Mike I can see your point after all the viet cong whupped on us pretty good in that brutal war and they did it the same way as the terrorists operate today. I dont want war I have kids who will be forced into this fight if we dont get a handle on the situation, hell we all might be drafted into this shite. I dont expect the terrorists of our time to ever behave any other way than they are behaving now like friggin cowards (hiding behind women and children and firing rockets then running away). At the end of the day it all comes down to one question which side are you on? The side of freedom or the side of terror because before its all over with there will be a hand to hand battle the cowards/terrorists wont let it be any other way. Look at Lebanon, Israel pulled out and handed over Gaza to the PLO and yet Hezbollah drew first blood, why did they do that? Because they want to eradicate the jews from the planet well if that happens then what, the christians, the pagans, blondepeople where does it end. Its a war by proxy being fought by the theocracy of Iran against the jewish state. So I dont agree with the statement that the terrorists are making a very wise move because this is just the beginning of Americas involvement in this mess, we dont have choice and when the next big terrorist act happens on our soil it will only set their demise in concrete. I hope nothing bad ever happens for all our sakes.

It's not so black and white as 'freedom or terror...choose!' Everyone would choose freedom...problem is terror to one person is freedom to another. Palestine/Israel is the perfect example.

  24. Blogger black dog | 9:39 AM |

Oh I see Hezbollah is just spreading more of their brand of freedom by attacking civilans. Thanks for clearing it all it up for me. I can see clearly now the rain is gone blah blah blah.

  26. Blogger black dog | 1:55 PM |

Oh NL. Its not a growl. I would like to have an honest to goodness discussion of the facts surrounding this issue. After all I am an American, I dont agree with a lot of the policies our government has instituted throughout history but I certainly dont support those who think strapping bombs on and destroying innocent life are friggin nuts.

  27. Blogger black dog | 1:55 PM |

I am actually agreeing with you Black Dog. I've been avoiding some of the debate, especially about the idea of freedom.

Really, first one has to even define freedom, as culturally such a term has many definitions. We normally have Americentric views of such an idea. But what is freedom? Is it the pursuit of life and happiness through some American ideal of liberty? And how do you define such an ideal of liberty in a country that has countless definitions for liberty and freedom?

Is freedom living under a dictator but not having a curfew? Is freedom a state of existing and pursuing religion and life, or is freedom some Puritanical closed corporate society? Maybe freedom is a state of bravery, or living under a democratic system, which not all people want, especially the governments formed of people who aren't democratic. See, Mike C says everyone wants freedom. That statement is just confusing to me...

There are volumes upon volumes of history books defining freedom... (and not just history books)

For the sake of hezbollah, maybe freedom means illegally occupying the state of Lebanon that the Lebonese govt do not want them to have the freedom to do; maybe Freedom is their concept to take Jerusalem by any means necessary... or maybe freedom is Palestinian economic freedom and not being oppressed so that workers go to work like cattle through barbed wire tunnels...

Aside from terrorist organizations, maybe freedom is just my right to say your belief need not be trampling my belief, especially when you have a bomb strapped around your waist like some idiotic new political fashion statement... which is what suicide bombers are: a gory fashion statement for the nightly news around the globe to post a body count...

Or maybe freedom means having a voice, even if we're all full of crap.
