Who really controls the Rock and Roll Farm? - By N.L. Belardes

You remember the old Rock and Roll Farm article from February, 2005? I wrote about the pizza-a-go-go, A.K.A. Jerry’s Pizza, A.K.A. The Rock and Roll Farm:
…now having become a punk hardcore metal frenetic zone where bands pay to play, and the young, like cockroaches scamper in to feel the music pitching them in a torrent that makes them ignore the slovenliness. They embrace Jerry’s as some kind of rebellious Bakersfield punk empire right in the heart of copland. …Jerry’s farm, its machinery was churning them out as fast as it could.
Has Jerry’s Pizza changed? Nate “The Baseball Bat of Poor Consciousness” Berg is back, sort of. His buddy Jon Coley, The Kerouac of Kmart is in… and the Rock and Roll Farm is churning bands out as fast as mini-pepperoni pizzas. I hear good and bad about Jerry’s, with the good being a reputation as a historic venue. The bad is all hearsay in treatment of bands and how the police never seem to muddle in their affairs. I haven’t been to a show there in a while but I know the crowds do show up… Jerry’s, in effect, stays open as an all-ages venue for live music.
Is that a big deal?
It is a big deal to stay open if you stop to think someone or some group might be bent on shutting many of the doors to the Bakersfield music scene. Recently, 50 people may have lost jobs at the Barbecue Factory because of a recent shut down of Club Vertigo in its banquet room. What about Street Klothes next to Jerry’s Pizza? They were told to halt any music and art shows in their venue because they had folks in their basement area. Ouch. Did they have a license? Was such deemed a fire hazard, or a safety hazard? And, have local cops been out to kick any so-called riff raff from the front of Street Klothes during daylight hours? You got it. That’s what I was told by the owner when I walked in one sunny summer afternoon. Why? I won’t even suggest that Jerry’s Pizza gets special treatment… maybe they just have all the required licenses. Or maybe they feed the city council with extra cheesy pizza…
Did you get your new city slogan collectible coffee mug?
Is keeping the downtown Bakersfield music scene vibrant simply about safety issues, health issues, or about cabaret licenses? Or, is the current shutting of doors to a vibrant Bakersfield music scene an orchestrated attack by the city council upon potentially violent clubs, Bakersfield music itself, or both? Or neither? Certainly Azuls and Kosmos have had no live bands perform because of a so-called lack of a cabaret license.
Why is it that some venues get policed while others seem to get away with… murder? Are we just talking speeding tickets here? Just catch a few, the rest will learn. Maybe the shutting down of the Bakersfield music scene is a war between cops and gangs with hard-working local musicians and businesses caught in the crossfire.
I remember sitting with Jimmy the Greek from Kosmos several months back. He was angry. I was sitting in a booth chowing down on an Ortega Burger when he made himself at home across from me. He informed me that he had a cabaret license but the Bakersfield police still closed any window of opportunity to live music in the venue under threats of heavy fines. Why? He said it was because of the shooting outside. Some gunmen got out of a car, started peppering downtown with bullets, and somehow that became the fault of Kosmos in the eyes of the police. That’s how he explained his problem. He had a license. Then why no live bands?
You tell me.
Or go ask Rock N Rodeo. Death, gangs, shootings… seems about the same number of deaths to me as Riverwalk Park, and that stays open. Maybe the city just needs to put up a few signs, “Head bang at your own risk—gun-toting gang sharks in the water,” or “Yuppies invited, but beware of shadows”.
We all know what happened at old Downtown Joes, now Capistrano’s where the ‘Downtown Sculpture and Assemblage Show’ recently went down; and I mean not just upstairs, but downstairs. Downstairs. Does Capistrano’s have a license to have people, film, and artwork downstairs? You know what happened in the old Downtown Joe’s don’t you? An angry patron and bouncers fought in a battle of titanic proportions: drugs, fists, asphyxiation, death on a lonely sidewalk... Then the doors shut.
Capistrano’s stays open to art in the basement, while Street Klothes stays closed to art and music in their downtown basement, while right next door, Jerry’s Pizza runs their rock and roll farm.
Hmm.
Who might be orchestrating this possible agenda to cast an iron curtain over the downtown Bakersfield music scene? The Bakersfiled city council? I heard Sue Benham didn’t want anything to do with Montgomery World Plaza either… Is a Latino Marketplace in inner city Bakersfield just an eyesore?

What’s going on with these yuppie monsters controlling our city, hell bent on destroying ethnic and music culture for what? An old gaslamp look downtown, but no cool look to the shoddy buildings, and no architectural theme? Hell, Kingsburg just up the road is 100 times better looking than Bakersfield’s muddy downtown vista because it has a common architectural theme. Get a hint Bakersfield City. We have potential. They’re so damn worried about a slogan and a sign, downtown gaslamps, and running out rock culture when downtown looks like a 1970s episode of Emergency, with big side burns on the buildings and everything. I thought this city was proud of its rock roots. Oh wait, what happened to Korn’s ‘Backyard Street’ sign?
Sign gone?
Or is this a sign of a rockless Bakersfield future?

The million dollar question? Is city councilwoman Sue Benham the Tipper Gore of Bakersfield, the leader of some moral majority after the heart of the downtown scene: music? Could this be some kind of city censorship going on? Stop the bands and music and the guns will stop? I don’t think Dave Hall was carrying a microphone and headed for the ghost of Downtown Joe’s when he was sickly gunned down in an apartment complex.
Where is the city council trying to scare gangbangers to, anyways? Right back into Dave Hall’s neighborhood? As if that’s the problem anyways. That’s an illusion. Gangs are already there! They’re everywhere, and just like the rest of America, Bakersfield city isn’t ready to go to war against gangs (essentially a large portion of our youth). They would rather try to force gangs into certain sections of town, corral them.
Why don’t they just hire the ghost of Buck Owens to do that? The gangsters are going to slip through ghostly fingers anyway the same way Palestinians do in Israel just before they blow up an entire market or café. And who needs that kind of terror?
So, destroy music culture, business revenue, keep the bad architecture, erect gaslamps, and erect a new slogan for the seal of Bakersfield, “In the City Council We Trust.” Sue Benham might like that since she was against smalltown mentality during the “In God We Trust “ debates. Should we just trust in her? “In Sue Benham We Trust”?
But then, we don’t even know if she’s responsible.
I’m just saying that I’m starting to see fingers point in her direction.

FINALLY someone said it. Thank you, Nick. The city council's holier-than-thou act is getting old. Sue, go throw a tea party. I'm sorry, the rock scene isn't mom's bee-bop of the 50s and 60s. Times have changed and so has wholesome little Bakersfield. Want to make Bakersfield better?? Go do something about the drop-out rate, or (gasp!) go raid some meth labs.
As for the venues, give them their music and go do something worth while. If you look at the big picture, the music scenes aren't even close to the myriad of problems Bakersfield has to offer.
I'd like your job for a day. Lets trade. You go to my sculpture class at Cal State, and Ill dress all spiffy and play the part being a "council woman". Then we'll really see who is making a better impression on Bakersfield. Granted, you've probably got me by a longshot fiscally and among the other über-conservatives, but dangit, just because my art and their music isn't too your liking, doesn't give you the right to pee on our parade.
As an art major at CSUB, I create visual culture and diversity. The musicians create audial culture and diversity. As a city council woman, you take it all away and put us in the corner for a time-out.

Did anyone know that Jerry, the owner of "Jerry's Pizza", works for the City of Bakersfield...oops...maybe no one is supposed to know that. I'd like to think that what is happening is not intentional, but, COME ON!!! How many times do gang members shoot up rock scenes? They don't. By shutting other nicer venues down, the City is driving kids, and their money, directly into the hands of Jerry's. Could the City be helping line Jerry's pockets because he works for them? Humm, I wonder? This smells like a monopoly perpetuated and aided by the City that we live in. This is sad and unfair but seems to be true. The proof is in the pudding. Jerry’s is hardly a venue anyway. The only thing Jerry’s has going for it is its history. At a time, Jerry’s was the only game in town doing live shows. Now, you have other venues trying to give local and out of town bands better options than a stinky basement where shows are booked by a guy who needs to shower more often, and managed by a manager who needs to be on psych meds. Sadly, some bigger bands skip Bakersfield because they think Jerry’s is the only place to play. Many locals just refuse to play there. This can’t go on forever. Sooner or later, the psycho manager will ended up smashing someone’s face in and will be put in prison, and the booker/ promoter will piss off the wrong person and get his little baseball bat returned to him in an unfriendly manner. Until then, fuck you very much City of Bakersfield for helping such a sorry ass dirty venue stay open.
Did I mention that Jerry (owner of Jerry's Pizza) works for the City?
Being a former downtown business owner who was in the process of opening a venue at one time... I can say that the licensing process for venues is all about politics and directly relates to how many other venues with the same type of licensing are in your direct vicinity. It also has everything to do with who you know, and sometimes... who you buy off or do favors for.
In my previous downtown location a few feet from the Alley Cat and around the corner from Riley's and then Downtown Joe's... I was told that the city didn't want another bar in the downtown 'bar walk' and was prevented certain licensing. However, Syndicate now operates serving alcohol in the exact same location.
Why? Because the owners had more money? Were better tied into the powers that be?
I did all the remodling of that location out of my pocket... turned that former clothing store location into a bar only to be refused certain licensing. They walked in to a location ready to open, only adding minor additions and had no problem getting licensing.
I will never understand why some downtown venues have no problems operating... while others are shut down, or pushed out.
If people are starting to point fingers... it's about time.
I'm with NL... Bakersfield's downtown needs an architectural facelift, not just gaslamps. I love the new look of the Padre, but what if anything are they going to do with that building? Will they reopen the piano bar?? I doubt it. And that was a cool bar.
For Bakersfield to be "Life as it should be" a lot has to change... and it should start with a cultural and architectural renovation of downtown.
I get so tired of all of the new subdivisions we are building in the outer reaches of the southwest, northwest, northeast, and Rosedale... when nothing is being done to rebuild and rebeautify downtown!

I was gettin all fired up reading your latest blog on who controls the Bakersfield music scene. It's obvious that we the musicians/artists do not.
Let's start a posse.

Oh yes...
As our beloved Korn boys always say, "It's on!"
Gracias
I have a feeling someone is going to have fun with this;)

Club Vertigo and The Bar-B-Q factory is closed because of bad management. The guy shouldn't have been having shows there in the first place, it wasn't in the lease. Not only did the owner not have permission from the Elks lodge to have shows there, he also didn't have the proper permits nor the insurance to cover the shows. At the present time, he has filed bankrupt, but he owes the Elks lodge over $30,000 in rent and has their building tied up in court so they can't even use their own hall for the next 6 months! The owner is to blame for the loss of jobs and no one else.
This is the kind of people I deal with when booking shows. Everyone wants to have art and music and bla bla bla, but no one wants to do it legally and they really don't want to pay anything or promote it. All I can say is, stick with places that have their shit together and you can't go wrong. When I was in highschool, we had to play in a garage at a party on shitty equipment. So boo friggen hoo the younger bands don't have The Key Club stage to perform on! It's called paying your dues. If a clothing store can't have shows because they are not in complience, then don't have shows. Do they have a whellchair entrance?. Are there enough fire escapes, fire extinguishers, sprinklers, supervision, insurance? Everyones all butt hurt because they can't have a show at night in their daytime business for free and then some little bastard breaks his neck because there is no handrail on the staircase or soda on the floor and THEN everyone understands the reason.
Interesting insight and allegations against Club Vertigo. The news simply reported a lack of a cabaret license... Maybe mainstream media will pick up on the story...
Kenny, you owe me $5. And yes, you can still play rock and roll in my garage on a bill with Dirty Spanglish.
...pizza...rock and roll...ghosts...gangs...bars...ortega burgers...city council...hey, is this a sneak preview of your next novel? ...yeah, I know ,I owe you a smoothie!
pay offs? cash-ola?
Elks Lodge? insurance?
mygawd!
A simple and well placed blow job might do the trick. (and if not, its great fodder all the same)
You really did say Elks Lodge didn't you. Rock 'n roll and Elks Lodge in the same blog.
um.
well, its not right.
Can you say, "Good 'Ol Boy Network?"

Not a bad article, but it still amazes me that when you refer to Downtown Joe's, you say "an angry patron" was invovlved. In fact, it was an angry gang banger over-dosed on PCP. This is the type of person who is hurting the music scene and making it hard to get licensing. The same thing happened at Rock N Rodeo...A couple of ignorant thugs cause the demise. Maybe if entertainers didn't have to worry about the small percentage of the population that can't handle the priviledge of going out, we wouldn't have "the man" imposing so many restrictions. I am remaining anonymous for my own safety from such thugs.
"They’re so damn worried about a slogan and a sign, downtown gaslamps, and running out rock culture when downtown looks like a 1970s episode of Emergency, with big side burns on the buildings and everything."
That's a classic line in a great article. I might have to link it from my own blog.
I have written about this type of thing at my own place, although much less eloquently and with much less fanfare.
http://sonicrusk.com/wordpress/?p=230
I can smell the persecution just watching the local news. They shut down entertainment establishments left and right. Where else are people going to go? Where would the bigwigs prefer people to do, stay at home and make more babies? Stay at home and listen to Christian rock on the boom box? Mix this in to the inevitable flow of thugs to every new venue and you have yourself a quandary. I just want to hang out with my friends, have a few drinks, check out some chicks with skirts and high heels, and not have to deal with drunk assholes. WTF?
I'm glad to see someone is finally noticing what goes on in this town with the music/club scene. I'm downtown everyday and I see more violence during the daytime than I ever see on a Thursday,Friday,or Saturday nite from the bars! But violence shouldnt have any baring on who can have Music related events at thier place's of buisness! The more things going on downtown the better! Buisness should be thriving down here! and its not something really needs to be done!
Yes, for an interesting take on local clubs, read "Club Sepsis" by Sonicrusk. He makes some valid points... as do all the commenters on this particular piece that was meant to spark a good discussion. I think it has. People shouldn't be afraid to talk about the city government. I mean, we elected them, didn't we?
Oh shit, girls are back to wearing high heels and skirts? I'm behind the times. I go out in flip flops.
In what sense do these uptight tie wearing yuppie pushies think they can solve everything by taking what little we have away? All we want is Art and some freakin Music. Some of us do these things with the best intentions, and things happen, why make them our faults? Much worse things are happening and this lady is deciding to play master on this puppet show? How about all the other stuff thats happening in Bakersfield, and all she wants is to get her hands on is our cultural values?! Indeed times have changed, and these aren't your whiley teenage oldies or your hearty clean-cut gangsters anymore. But Bakersfield belongs to us and our tastes, evidently it doesn't if grandma isnt baking fresh cookies anymore and the kitchen is now a meth lab. But miss "council woman" wants to take down our music scene instead of something that fairly sounds like it has anything to do with the problems here in Bakersfield. A round of applause for the great work done here in the greater region of Bakersfield.
BTW, Susan Jones cracks me up. Who are these secretive Elks anyways? And why aren't they called muskrats?
Seriously, Jenn raises a good point. Why can't artists just be left to be artists...? Do artists cause that much trouble?
Artists don't cause trouble, stupid people do just like that council woman. It's trouble because no one has anywhere to go!! WTF! Don't they realize that, or do they even care? I really don't think they give a damn. I can't wait until Ed and Sue, and all the people that make it hard for artists to be themselves, DIE!! Or at least retire and let young conscious minds take over with fresh ideas not mom and pop ideations! Those days are long gone and for good reason- THEY SUCKED!!!
There is rarely any violence at band shows. Club Vertigo (at The Barbeque Factory,) was a great new place for live music. The recent Adema show was off the hook, and you didn't read about anyone beating the shit out of someone, or shooting up the place. Now, Vertigo is gone.

Great article. Its too bad and so sad that so few foul it up for so many. What It comes down to is this, its not what you know but its who you blow in this town.
I you ask me, its the Elks are the trouble makers. Unlike artists who can be just artists and do what artists do...we aren't sure what those sneaky Elks are up to are we.
And yah, why are they called Elks, good question....true to my heritage I'd have to ask why Canadian Elks aren't called Beavers or somesuch.
Gangs are ruining Bakersfield, bottomline. Artists, musicians, are givers, sharers, leaders of joy and merriment. Yet they get the big hand slap from authority. Our government officials are afraid of gangs, period. That is what is tearing up Bakersfield streets. No one wants to talk about it because it's cliche now, or something. My neighborhood is worse than ever. I want to move and yet, the others look as bad too! School is back in session. 2 motorcycle cops will sit for a couple of hours and write tickets. I am glad to see this concern for our little ones. Maybe they could sit in front of our homes at night for a couple of hours, instead of a quick drive through if you're lucky, and send a new message. I think every Jr. High and High school has an assigned officer now. Why? What happened over the years? Was it the evil artists that caused all this? That damned Drama club? Those damned high school dances with crazy bands playing Alice Cooper and lighting smokepots? No, it is an out of control gang membership that we have been slowly programmed to embrace. The extreme violence at bars always ends up gang related. And the bar takes the rap. The owner takes the rap. How tied into gangs are the new lords?...hmmm...maybe a new novel...
Wow its really interesting the stuff you find when you google your own business name. I am the creator of Bakersfield nightclub Club Vertigo. I would like to set the rumors about why Club vertigo was shut down. The lease allowed for events and special events and any other events that the owner of the barbecue factory wanted to put on. The setup process for the club took me 3 months to get going and in that time things were cleared with the owners of the property which are the elks. There were no objections to my knowledge, During the time that I rented the Hall from the Barbeque factory and put on the club I carried a $1 million dollar special events policy with liquor liability coverage and that was an addition to the policy that was carried by the Barbecue factory to be in compliance with there lease as well as to have weddings and other events in the hall. As far as the cabert license goes the owners of the barbecue factory were left with the impression that the owners of the property had already had one. Being that they were conducting special events which included live music and serving liquor to the general public long before the barbeque factory and I had come along. But still we had already applied for one just to be on the safe side, we were 79 days into the process. We had already been inspected by the fire dept and were in the final stage of inspection by the Vice Department which is by the city.We had never had any problems with our club, I ran a very tight secruity detail which included 8 uniformed guards and 2 bouncers. All club patrons were searched before entering and re-entering the club. The city did have a personel ajenda agianst us as well as our wonderful city council women Sue Benhem. It was told to us by the vice squad who came charging into my club like we were running a meth lab out of it on the night we were closed down. The city and Sue just flat out dont like hip hop and rap music which we played. Due to the popularity of the club and the exposer I had for it, the city and Sue got wind of it and from that point on an investigation was started. Like I said before we never had to call the cops and deal with any type of violence. Which to the nessecary percautions that we took in order to protect our club patrons, which include searches, uniformed security, blocking the parking lot to prevent crusing and serving free food. The downtown night life will continue to disappear as long as Sue Benhem has her way. If you notice all places that play hip hop or rap are slowly being closed down. No more azuls, Manhattan, places like downtown joes spot are having trouble re-openning due to restrictions by the city. its so bad that we even had problems with A.B.C and the city for the American Legion post 26, which is a non-profit and helps veterans of past and present wars. Well theres a little info to help clear some of the air on club vertigos closing. OH! by the way yes the owner of the Barbeque factory did owe the elks money, But it the elks Knew how to be a landlord and knew landlord teant laws then they wouldn't be owed the money for repairs and things that had to be fixed by the barbeque factory that should have been fixed and paid for by the elks.
