At the grave of Edgar Allan Poe - By N.L. Belardes
A little while ago I sat watching the World Series at a little corner bar in Baltimore. Before that I was in Baltimore's Little Italy, chowing on linguini and shrimp, calamari, and some good red wine. I was a little tipsy.
Earlier I realized that Poe's grave was likely within walking distance of where I was staying. I'd walked past the Inner Harbor, past firemen securing a gas leak. I saw old sea vessels, and eventually watched St. Louis take a 4-3 lead in the ballgame. "I gotta go," I said to the fellas I was with. "I think I want to go see Poe's grave."
It was nearly midnight.
The streets of downtown Baltimore at midnight are creepy to say the least. I wound my way beneath a huge tower, tiptoed around people sleeping on the sidewalk and headed past the Hippodrome as people passed along the sidewalk.
Eventually I found West Fayette Street where Poe's grave rests in Westminster Hall Cemetery. The gates were closed, but that didn't stop me from being extremely creeped out...
I wasn't sure which grave was his and didn't stay very long to find out. I'll be back in the morning to grasp the mystery.

were those lights at the cemetary or from your video phone? how creepy was that? looks so dark and yellow... freaky dude. you're so brave to walk the graveside of the dear edgar allen poe at midnight.
oooh that cemetery looks very creepy! I wouldn't want to step over people that were sleeping on the sidewalk/street. Creepy Baltimore streets that's for sure! And that cemetery gate looks like its from the Adam's family!
Can't wait to see what Poe's grave looks like in the daylight!
I take it you don't watch the HBO series The Wire.
Walking around Baltimore at night?
Were there any "Raven's" lurking by Poe's grave??
Uh oh, I haven't seen The Wire... should I have been even more terrified???
I didn't see any ravens except on one tombstone... I took lots of photos...
Ohhh can't wait to see the photos!
I would have peed.
nice new profile pic man :)
You back in btown now?? have a safe trip and all?? I don't do graveyards at night, especially the ones outside gothic looking old churches... Too creepy for my likings.
The Wire - brilliant but violent show that takes place in Baltimore. i have friends that say it is the best show on TV, hands down.
Did you ever declare to your readership that you were even going to MD? Not that you have to as we are not a gaggle of moms, it just surprised me. One day, the Condors, the next day, Baltimore.
Give them Baltimore Ravens fans my best... and then kick them in the nuts.
S.R.: The Wire? I have to look it up for sure... Baltimore is scary. I talked to a cabby who said there are always a lot of hidden police--undercover as bums, etc., in the downtown area... No, I didn't declare I was headed out to Baltimore. I thought it would be a fun surprise.
Dobbler: I refued to buy any Ravens merch for a reason.
ET: I did, twice.
what a puss! you go into a arvin cemetery but not that one, once again, puss! love paul
I totally thought I saw something in that first video aside from that light... Hmm.
Nevermore!!
Thank you for showing how gloriously creepy my hometown of Baltimore is. I wouldn't have it any other way!
