I commented on Stonyfield's Bovine Bugle blog recently about square hay vs. round hay. They liked the question so much they wrote a blog entry:
A reader of the blog wondered why some hay is put up as round bales and some is put up as square bales. Here on Howmars Farm, we use both types in our feeding system for the animals. The round bales, 1200-1500 pounds, are usually fed to the cows and older heifers, while the small, 30-40 pound square bales are fed to the younger stock. (Read the full article)
Of course, I was also mesmerized by their snake video. This Milk Snake is a monster!:
All to promote their yogurt and other dairy products...
But the kicker is in the irony I found today on Susan Jones lovely Canadian photography blog, Out on the Coast. Susan is a regular reader of Paperback Writer. Don't ask me why she loves to read about Bakersfield. I have no idea, but she leaves the best comments.
Anyways, the irony is in one of her photos... it's round hay... or dare I suggest: Chuck Norris cigarettes?

i hate snakes... yuck! ...and i didn't know until i read this blog that hay was bailed in two different ways... i've always only seen it square. LOL.
So really, chingpea, you can categorize people into one of two hay groups: round or square. Which are you?

I love Susan's photos as well. I love trying to guess what some of them are. And I even saw a ghost in one of her window shots!
I saw that sod picture earlier and never in a million years would have thought up something as clever as Chuck Norris ciggies. hehehe.
