The Dalloways, Willieboy and La Costa Earwig - By N.L. Belardes

The Brit banana parked at the Dalloways

Yesterday I stopped by the Dalloways house to drop off some Kern County Fair passes. You know the Dalloways. Two of the members are the married duo of Cortnie and Gary Enns. He's a singer/songwriter/creative writing professor; she's a lovely keyboardist with a darling kneedipping high-heeled dance that tickles me and my friends when she lets her fingers do the walking to Gary Enns' brit pop alternative lounge stylings. Whew! Big sentence!

Cortnie Spice, I mean Cortnie's lala spice

Which one is Gary?

I stopped by with chingpea and Matildakay. We were on our way to get food but made time to see the Dalloways cool brit banana car, their tough cat, big-headed Cotty kitty beast, and new reed-covered fence.

I was lucky enough to hear a rough mix of a grooving new song that's going to be on their follow-up album to the acclaimed Penalty Crusade, titled, The Distant Fairs. Oh yeah, I even picked up Gary's acoustic. "I never heard you play, N.L." he said.

"Not sure you want to," I said. I finger-picked a few terrible licks.

Euro coffee pot ala Dallowanskis

Cortnie talks to cats

After talking about fried twinkies, funnel cakes and corn dogs we talked Mexican Food.

Blah blah blah I don't remember the conversation other than Gary saying, "You gotta go to La Costa."

"Sure. La Costa. Is that better than Santiagos?"

"I think so," said Gary.

The new reed fence

Skull cat killa

Cortnie made some wise crack not even worth mentioning because she threatened to sick her calico cat Clem Clem Clemmy Clementine Clavicle on me. Oh, not taking me seriously? This dogcat kills rats and birds. It steals eggs and drinks the birdie juice like yellow jamba slushies. And she wears a SKULL collar just to intimidate people like me.

Clemonstra

Regarding the fair: I think Cortnie wanted to win a new Fisher-Price keyboard at the quarter toss. I won a stuffed Donkey Kong(ball roll race), a bear(quarter toss), and a fluffy dog(ping pong ball in a blue bowl). I rubbed it in. I was the champion of the fair. Who could ever top my lucky #2 day? Two quarters in the coin toss, #2 horse in the ball race, and second win at the ping pong toss on my second set of ping pong balls.

Cortnie threatened death by cat claws.

Cotty has "Cotty's House" as it's own big college radio hit song

We finally left and they had a fun rainy time at the fair.

Today I was talking to my old hockey buddy Willieboy. He's on the board of beer directors for Bakersfield's Brews in the Village. You can always see me in his brew posse wearing a sombrero. He was limping today from having broke his toe while on a boat to go lobster hunting.

"It happened two minutes after I got on the boat," he said, reliving his traumatic falling-down-the-boat-stairs event. He walked drunken like he had just cooked up a 7 Corona fiesta in his back yard.

Oh yeah. It was hilarious. Willieboy is hilarious. If anyone could be a stand up comic, it's Willieboy. No lie. Hands down, he does the best gay interpretation I've ever seen. His brokeback antics rival Robin Williams flamboyance in The Bird Cage.

We were getting hungry at the old day job and he said, "La Costa."

"Is it better than Santiagos?"

"Oh yeah."

blah blah blah

And so we went to La Costa.

This is Willieboy on the elevator. He used to have a Blackberry, until it went through the wash; now he has a cell phone. Instead of typing messages he writes Post-Its to himself and slams them onto his phone. It's new technology meets old. "Takes less time to write a Post-It then type in a message," he says.

At the restaurant the salsa was good. But not as good as Santiagos.

I ordered a chile verde burrito. That was a #2 on the menu. Lucky #2 baby.

chingpea was in the house and ordered... crap I can't remember.

But Willieboy ordered a #3, which was some kind of chicken salad.

When the food arrived Willieboy thought he ordered a #2, the lucky chile verdo burrito. He didn't. He got grumpy but decided he would live with his choice: a giant chicken salad on a giant leaf of lettuce.

"I'll split mine with you. Take half," I said.

"No, I can't."

"Just take half, man. It's cool. We'll share."

Finally, he did. I asked for an extra plate, got one, and gave him half of my burrito, some rice and beans. In turn, he scraped me off some of his salad.

We chowed.

It was a breaking bread kind of a moment until I saw a fat earwig crawl from his salad. It ran around the edge of his plate and ducked behind a big leaf.

No, it wasn't as traumatic as you think. Willieboy said to the waiter, "There's an earwig in this salad. When you replace it, can you bring a chile verde burrito instead?"

Lucky #2 baby.

"Sure," the waiter said. He took the salad and my plate.

That left half of my burrito which I had already passed to Willieboy, who now chowed with style.

I hadn't even taken a bite of my burrito yet.

Plateless, I stared at my burrito that he was eating joyfully.

He offered me half.

I declined.

He offered again.

I partook of my old burrito.

And then two more burritos came.

Lucky #2, baby.

I don't know what happened to the earwig...

i had a #1 silly! having lunch with you two is ALWAYS entertaining... you two are up there when it comes to the funniest guys i know. i definitely needed those smiles today. thank you!

that was also a lot of fun at the dalloways's place... they have a cool fountain, nice digs and pretty kitties!

    woo,
    chingpea

La Costa ... I've ate there but for the life of me can't remember where it's at. I thought it was the place at H and California, but they burnt out and were replaced by a crappy La Mina that can't seem to ever get my breakfast burrito right (Seriously, what part of NO Eggs, Nothing but Potatoes, Bacon, and Cheese don't you understand? Potatoes, Bacon, and Cheese, in a tortilla ... no beans, no ham, no eggs ... just potatoes, bacon, and cheese - err sorry, can you tell they've screwed up many mornings, and I'm so not a morning person).

Anyway ... eww on the bug. When I worked at Red Robin it's like they made their salads as if the Red Robin was gonna come bob bob bobbin along ... at least a plate once a week had a lady bug in it. Or worse.

And I must add, I have a cool Euro coffee pot too. My Aussie friend made me go to the Cost Plus in Santa Barbara when I was visiting her and then forced me to buy one. I don't regret that at all. Love the thing, love the fact the coffee it produces should be ate with a fork. Good times for the morning.

Speaking of which, I better get to bed otherwise I won't be waking up in the morning.

La Costa is alright, but it's not better than Santiago's.

  4. Anonymous Anonymous | 12:25 AM |

The Dalloways have a cool car. Earwigs are nasty! Willieboy is pretty hot. La Costa has great food, but not too crazy about the service.

    Peace,
    Kayla

Congrats on your stuffed Donkey Kong ... Fried TWINKIES? Are you kidding me? Who thunk up that one?

...I'll bet it was the salad earwig. He was trying to gross you off the whole concept of salad ... "Forget the healthy stuff ... go get yourself a FRIED TWINKY, baby!"

I'm of the opinion that La Costa (21st and Q) is the best hole-in-the-wall Mexican place in Bakersfield. When I worked out at the River we would eat there about once a week. For lunch I'd recommend two shrimp tacos and dinner, the camarones al ajo or the fajitas. And I have a friend that was obsessed with the chicken mole there.

1977...Sambos restaurant next to the old Zody's building...Justy Queet and Willieboy chowing on some breakfast...he pulls out a 35mm film container...drops a roach on his plate...we all ate free that night...30 years later...hmmm

I will eat nothing woth more than 4 legs (thats really a lie because i like things with lots of legs that come from the ocean.) But I do not like creepy crawly's and I won't go near them. If I saw the earwig I might have screamed.

  9. Blogger n.l. | 8:20 AM |

DW, you have quite a few Willieboy tales. Dare to share another about the old rocker Bakersfield days?

I love these lines in that link:

"Just open your stomach, and let my food in.

And so your adventure, will soon begin."

I would have asked for ranch dressing to dip it in. Everybody knows anything tastes good if you add ranch dressing.

  13. Blogger Matildakay | 9:08 AM |

eewwww! I think I would have puked if I saw an earwig in my food or any one else's food at the table. I definitely wouldn't have been able to keep eating! Maybe I should give my cousin the health inspector a call...

Hey, N.L., next time we play you can bring your Donkey Kong up on stage and dance. But not for too long.

Don't flatter me with your Donkey Kong dance talk, Mrs. Dalloway.

  16. Anonymous khulsy | 10:38 AM |

Dude La Costa is the best, hands down. Aside from the earwigs. It's all about the pollo con mole, and I think their salsa rocks ass. However, I have not had Santiago's. Seriously Nick, get the pollo con mole next time you're there. Or the terrorists win.

  17. Blogger dw | 12:31 PM |

I better stop N.L., paybacks could get ugly!lol

  18. Anonymous Norma | 1:55 PM |

    Did you guys read
    Nick's receta del salsa
Estimated prep and cook time: 3-1/2 Coronas

    Es MUY caliente. LOL

yes, silly me again... following the links. This recipe was under Willieboys lobster experience.

Hey. I was looking at the pictures and I see he went wine tasting at Eagle Castle. I belong to their wine club. Es muuuuy bueno el vino rojo! (their red wine is yummy!

  19. Blogger mrseggy | 5:31 PM |

So, inspite of the earwig...was it better than Santiagos?

  20. Blogger n.l. | 5:48 PM |

no. the rice and beans are better at Santiagos... and the earwigs aren't as crunchy.

It would have ben funny to hear ET scream at the sight of bugs...

  21. Blogger n.l. | 5:49 PM |

By the way. The Dalloways cat, Cotty Bighead has a BIG HEAD.

  22. Anonymous aj | 7:28 PM |

Aww cotty reminds me of miss priss aka tiger. If you ever see that bitch michelle tell her I am still holding a grudge and I will until I get revenge. Kittynapper.

  23. Blogger KayK | 7:48 PM |

So where's Santiagos? I'm always down for good Mexican food.

Now I remember La Costa, my boss drags me there occasionally, I like their fajitas, but it's nothing special. My family likes that place across from the Suzuki dealership on Golden State. I sometimes get a craving for Sinaloa's (a bowl of spanish beans, tortillas, and guacamole - oh and of course bread) - but maybe that's because I was conditioned to it as a baby. My mom would bring the baby grinder and shovel table food into my mouth at a very young pre-teeth age.

Aww man, now I want some spanish beans and their oddly spicy and bright green guacamole.

  24. Blogger G. S. Enns | 11:31 PM |

La Costa omelettes are fantastic. It is a great little place. By the way, thanks for the fair passes! We ate excellent corn dogs and then gool ole cinammon rolls and then the deep fried Twinks. Now that's some fair food!

Before you can compare Mexican restaurants- you have to have benchmark criteria. Salsa and chips are the #1 criteria. I disagree with NL in this however. I think Santiagos chips taste like they're out of a bag and nuked. The Santiago salsa has good flavor though. As far as food- no contest- La Costa wins hands down. When ordering off the menu (not lunch specials) LaCosta has way more interesting fare. There's a garlic cream shrimp that is to go gay for. But if you're comparing lunch specials, then I agree, Santiagos and LaCosta are neck and neck.

I noticed KAYK mentioned Sinaloas. Casa de Sin always sounds good before you go- like "let's mow some salsa and bread", but when your taco bell enchilada style- dog food tasting meat taco shows up- it's like- "Shoulda' ate at LaCosta".

  26. Blogger n.l. | 11:22 AM |

OK, I'll concede on the chips. Sadly, Santiago's has no earwigs in their salads. I mean, that's messed up. You should be able to order a crunchy earwig salad if you want one.

And yes, Sinaloas is misleading. It looks like a cool rustic old Mexican restaurant. Inside its kind of creepy. And then when the food comes it's downright terrifying...

There are ghosts in Sinaloas, and they're in the food too.

  27. Anonymous Norma | 1:59 PM |

If you like buggies you should go to Perko's in Delano. When I used to work there as a teenager we used to serve roaches in our drinks. hahahaha and Ewwwww. But it's true. For a while they had roach issues and those little bastards would show up everywhere. In the salad bar, in the ice, in the kale they cooks used to make your plate look pretty.. blech.

  28. Blogger Matt | 2:23 PM |

    Time out...

I eat tons of Mexican food, and I have come to the conclusion...

La Costa is the best Mexican food in town..manos down!

Santiago's is alright, but come on now brotha...you're starting to scare me! I hope you don't think Mexicali is authentic too...bleh..

Has anyone tried the seafood at La Costa? "La Costa" does mean "The Coast," and there are lobsters and crabs all over the place.

The Shrimp, fish, ceviche, and the caldo de camaron are all bombdigity, my friendly homesteeze!

Here's how you judge a good Mexican restaurant..Chips & salsa. If the salsa is good and most importantly the chips are WARM, it's gonna be good. La Costa has got both..

Earwigs schmearwigs...I know you why you like Santiago's...cuz' you know THEM!!! AHA!!!!!!

Cactus Valley on Rosedale Hwy. The salsa is great, the chips are very nice, and the food is great too. Yeah, I know the owner from the cactus club.
