Nestled among the conservative architecture and well-manicured lawns of southwest Bakersfield, the Adame residence is a true Halloween treat for the eyes and senses.

But unless you’re invited inside, you’d never know.

Beginning with a gothic-inspired main door of castle Dracula appeal, the Adame home is the stuff of sweet dreams — make that, nightmares.

“Halloween is the only holiday we celebrate,” said Kathy Adame, 48, smiling as she plays host to a number of guests visiting during a rare, midweek open house counting down the days to Oct. 31.

Her husband, Moe Adame, 43, agrees.

“It’s a fun, no-obligation holiday. You don’t have to buy people anything, and you can just be yourself,” he said.

For the curious, the Adame’s casa is not another, run-of-the-mill decorated tract home covered in typical cardboard skeletons and harvest time scarecrows. Rather, it is the embodiment of the Halloween spirit.

And not just in October, but everyday.

“Our home is a reflection of our personalities. We like the macabre,” Kathy said.

Entering the Adame’s tidy, main front room, guests are either shocked or fascinated by the numerous horror film inspired art pieces, collected by the couple over the years.

Gargoyles, a church pulpit, medieval-style candle holders and a torch, a “coffin” wall they built themselves, and a vampire killing kit, to name few.

“Most of the things in the house were purchased in LA,” said Moe, pointing to different ghoulish items hanging or standing throughout the house. “Some of our favorite stores are Dark Delicacies in Hollywood and Necromance.”

Despite the curious thoughts that may race through the heads of visitors, the Adames ultimately want people to know that neither themselves nor their home are a threat to their neighbors.

I first visited Moe and Kathy's house back in 2001 when Moe helped 3 Cent Nickle record our first demo titled "Have a Sandwhich". The red candles in the black hallway dripped blood-colored wax all over my effects system. It was a sight to behold, but Moe and Kathy always made you feel comfortable and welcome being at their home. They are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet in this town, and it's sad to see them go.

By the way, just so everyone knows, Adame is pronounced "uh-dah-me".

Matt Munoz told me a lot about the Adame house and about how kind Moe and his wife are... Moe is definitely one of the strongest points of Bakersfield music history, having been in the influential band, Burning Image.

I decided to take my family over to the Adame household to invoke some serious Halloween spirit. I had read in an article featuring Moe and his family, that they had planned to go all out this Halloween in anticipation of hoisting anchor and moving out of town... A one last Bakersfield Halloween of sorts. I had not seen Moe or Kathy in quite some time, so it only seemed right to make the trek to their neck of the woods a must, on this Halloween of all nights.

Moe and I go back a good 7-8 years. He lead me by the hand down to L.A. to help me pick out my first bass guitar. He taught me alot about the cut throat business of playing in a band, how one shouldn't wear his heart on his sleeve while playing in a band, and how sweet of a release music can offer the soul. Like a stubborn son, I didn't listen... But I still appreciated the shit out of what he had done for me.

I walked up behind Moe and said, "Moe Moe the Wonder Donkey, you son of a bitch... you're going to leave town without saying goodbye"? A surprised look came over Moe's face as he realized who just called him out. I then asked Moe if Kathy was home, to which he replied yes.

Remembering that I had previously made a promise to introduce my daughter to Kathy, I knew I shouldn't be wasting anytime. It took a minute or two for Kathy to realize who I was (she's used to seeing me as the old bald headed punk rocker she always took me for) but it wasn't much longer before she ushered my wife, daughter and I into the house for some long overdo catching up.

Moe joined us shortly, relieving himself from his maitre' d type duties in his frontyard. It was a very short lived reunion for all of us as I didn't want to take away from their festivities. The hugs, hellos and goodbyes shared in the Adame household produced a sense of satisfaction and companinonship not shared between Moe and I in a long long time. I was given a copy of his Burning Image re-issue album, a current set of contact numbers and a promise to gather again before their pending migration out of town.

    T'was a goodnight.
