A weekly dose of the Philadelphia burbs - By Jen Burke

A weekly dose of the Philadelphia burbs is an exclusive view of life in urban East Coast America. Jen Burke of the novel and blog, A Life Less Convenient: Letters to My Ex shares her photos and thoughts exclusively with us at Paperback Writer. You can purchase her book at Merge Press. A big thanks to Jen for her recent shout out about Lords: Part One on her very beautiful website in a piece titled, N.L. Belardes: Urban Legends and Film Contests. -n.l.

Someday I want to be able to take driving/car pics that are as luscious as scenes from Hiroshima, mon amour. This is one of many cab pics. Considering how dangerously close they come to my car on a regular basis, I get plenty of shots. This one did not, in fact, take off my left headlight. I spend an obscene amount of time driving on Broad and Market Streets in Philadelphia. Since I thought to bring my cam with me, I've never enjoyed them more...

Jen... did you take that picture WHILE DRIVNIG? Holy shit.

Ok first, are you sure it didn't take half of your front bumper with it?

And second.. and you have to be honest... were any pedestrians hurt in the making of this article? :)

  2. Blogger n.l. | 9:10 PM |

you know, that is a good question... heh

I love how you can see the green light in this pic... that cab driver is a baaad man.

I adore Philadelphia. My friends, Mel and Tom lived there while she went to Temple University.... the Art Museum, all the statues everywhere, the Liberty bell.... the cobblestone streets...

I love this photo! And Jen's blurb. I am constantly fascinated by all the fabulous photography I find on blogs, and Jen has some great photos on her blog!! Very talented!!

Matildakay: You stole her book from me.

  7. Blogger Matildakay | 10:28 AM |

I stole a carrot cake from a big bunny in Oildale once...

And you lived to tell about d.w. Yet another reason why you're on my "hero" list. You and n.l. The initialed men of mystery.

Hope there was no "funny herbs" in that carrot cake.

Hey, N.L., thanks for posting this!

Norma, the majority of pics you see in my flickr stream and blog were taken while driving. I call it the ongoing red light series because as soon as I get a red light, I take the cam off my lap and shoot. Naturally, on days with great light, I hit all the green lights. :) The game for me is what kind of decent shots exist around me in those seconds, and can I spot them?

Matilda, I heart you for stealing! Word has it that N.L. will be arm-wrestling you for it? You folks taking bets?

  11. Blogger Norma | 11:50 AM |

I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that it might piss n.l. off that I'd bet matildakay could kick his ass at arm wrestling in a hearbeat.

  12. Blogger Matildakay | 1:32 PM |

Norma: Thanks for the vote of confidence in an arm wrestling match! I just might win since 'M' my trainer makes me lift weights all the time!! :P

Jen: He's going to have to beat me up to get it back... you've touched my heart with your words.

    Matilda, thank you!

Julie, I went to Temple for my undergrad. LOVED IT. That was a very positive experience for me after spending a year at U of Richmond (not a good match for me).
