Fake documentaries aren't going to help anyone. If anything, I expect it will only undermine any perceived legitimacy to the "Lords conspiracy".

I agree with you Nick, Bakersfield needs culture, but promoting fake documentaries will probably only help cement your reputation as a "wild eyes conspiracy buff" or whatever the hell the Californian called you.

I'm gonna have to say that no to that video.

John B: Are you not a supporter of the arts?

    Come on, man.

When did I claim to be an expert on The Lord of Bakersfield? I wrote a FICTION novel and I write Op Ed articles discussing the Lords of Bakersfield as an interesting topic. Think Blair Witch. It's all in good fun. The truth is the Californian is the conspiracy theorists you're worried about.

    Didn't you read their articles?

"Powerful gay men. Vulnerable teen-age boys. Murder. For years, some prominent local men who led secret lives were rumored to be protected. Whispers surrounding another important man's death prompt the question: Is there really a conspiracy?"

They published articles with 'conspiracy and legend' printed all over the front page. There is no proof that the Lords of Bakersfield even exist!

My Lords book is plain and simple: I'm guilty of writing fiction and perpetuating a myth of a bunch of creepy guys through good storytelling. Are there truths in my work? Sure there are...

I'm no more guilty of art and fiction than Oliver Stone, Martin Scorcese and anyone who has fictionalized conspiracies.

The film festival is a good time. Don't belittle a fun commercial just because you think it clouds some kind of truth that's never been proven. I think it's great that people in Bakersfield can poke fun of The Lords of Bakersfield through pop culture, instead of talking in whispers or just reading about the conspiracy in the local paper.

And in this case a conspiracy written about in the Bakersfield Californian.

Rickey and Jason please tell your actor dude that he does TOO GOOD of a job being the creepy Sundale. eww Seriously!

Hectic Films Lords videos and promos are all over the web so I doubt anybody missed them and should be able to recognize the actor.

We all know the interview is was all in fun and is meant to promote the Lords of the Cinema contest and the BIFF.

    Or was it? muahahahaha.

Oh yeah, I just realized. Hey John B., Simon Sundale, Gregory Pitts and Rocky Rollins are all fictitious names from my book. So really, the commercial promotes characters from my book, not any kind of non-fiction Lords of Bakersfield... -peace!

I loved this commercial for BIFF!! I love the affects of the footage that makes it seem like lost footage from the 70's. Very cool and creative!

    Great job Hectic Films!

    I can't wait for BIFF!

Nick you're right, your book is technically fiction. But we both know that the story revolves around very real events.

I guess it just upset me to see someone making a hyper-sensationalized video (I doubt the previous publisher of the paper ever pulled a gun on an interviewer), that in my opinion marginalizes a very real problem in our community. This sort of over-villifying "fictitious" depiction only helps detract from the areas of legitimacy in your story.

Don't get me wrong, I agree that the wisest approach to this story is to handle it as fiction (so you don't get a visit from Jagel's very real goon squad), but at some point I feel we need to take a collective breath and realize that your story is about as close to non-fiction as fiction ever gets. I've been meaning to ask you for awhile, whether or not you believe the story. I have a feeling, however, that you're too clever for a straight answer.

I grew up in this small town, and over the course of my life I've heard countless first hand accounts that seem to corroborate the "legend" that is Lords.

It's good that your book gets people talking, but if we reach the point where we're completely forgetting the historical roots (and selling "I got Molested by Simon Sundale" figurines), I'd say the book has only helped reinforce the shroud of secrecy and disinformation that protects the ilk running this town.

And I didn't mean to sound so harsh earlier, I truly admire your blog and your contributions to the local art scene. I guess I'm just frustrated that the only way one can expose these scumbags is through "fiction".

Thanks John B. I don't think anyone will spend the time writing a non-fiction book unless people are willing to go on record. It would take re-creating events like, what really happened to Dana Butler? Who would talk? Could someone really piece together the night she disappeared?

    That might happen one day.

I never give up hope. I think all the attention and crazy pop culture antics will help get the story the attention it deserves so that a group of people might talk to reporters, historians, or documentary filmmakers...

I doubt if it will be me. I have a lot of other books to write. But someone might, and they could get rich off it.

what's the real truth, what's the real fiction?...that's why it's called "history", it's just his-story...
