Hackers erase Bakersfield band Adema's myspace page of 36,000 friends - By N.L. Belardes

Bakersfield band Adema's myspace page was hacked on November 8th. Will it be resurrected from the myspace.com servers? That's 36,000 connection points down the tubes (not friends, I hate that term and you know why). And that's a big deal when you're a band with a big recording contract with Earache records, a new album about to come out, and when the music industry depents on bands online networking prowess with myspace fans: how many song downloads can you get per day?
Adema started a new myspace page, www.myspace.com/ademamusic
and sent out a bulletin. Here's a portion:
As of Wednesday, November 8th 2006, the official ADEMA Myspace page was gone. Non-existent. Disappeared into thin air! We noticed it was missing from people's "top 8" or "top 24". When we tried logging in, it simply read "invalid password". We tried the Myspace search engine - and got NOTHING!
We chilled for a few hours (thinking that maybe it was simply a "glitch" in the stystem. (You ALL know that Myspace can be a pain in the ass sometimes... It's a little slow; shit's not workin' like it's supposed to,ect...). It has it's faults. Myspace is kinda like you're ugly cousin. Or your stupid sister. Or that crazy-ass Uncle that laughs at his own jokes... But it's family; you don't just kick your family to the curb, because you don't "get along" at times, right?
...we had about 36,000+ friends; people that we spoke with online everyday that always keep us on the right track & BELIEVE in us (even when sometimes it feels like we don't believe in ourselves...). Myspace had become a big part of our lives; whether we wanted it to or not. It has become a part of my daily routine when I wake up in the morning: get out of bed. take a leak. feed the cat. check Myspace. (though not neccesarily in that order...lol).
There is a fake ADEMA profile that also mysteriously popped up the same day that our original Myspace went down - We think this might be the rat-fuck that hacked into our shit (you know who you are...). I'm not going to glorify them by advertising for his site - they'll be dealt with soon enough :)
I have a problem with myspace: People depend too much on it for business and social networking. So what's the probem if myspace is a great tool for marketing yourself as a business or individual?
This is sad news as many of you readers know I have recently dealt with haters on myspace too: a select few from the defunct elitist press, who I could easily photoshop into strange sexual poses and permanently dirty their names too. But why play that game? Such people just make themselves look stupid and unprofessional. Their antics will haunt them as they seek to further climb in the professional world (By the way, you can still see a cached site of the myspace hate site against me if you know how Google works).
It's what I tell people all the time: your myspace page, or myspace itself could disappear any day. If all your eggs are in a basket that you can't control, then where does that leave you if you life a life or you're in an industry that depends on statistics you can generate through myspace?
The problem? Myspace doesn't allow people to purchase myspace urls and have themm hosted on outside servers. That means I can't purchase www.myspace.com/nlbelardes.
Myspace controls www.myspace.com/nlbelardes. I'll never control it unless I own the url and a myspace software package.
So I don't take myspace as seriously as others. It's a great tool, but let's face it, your page, my page, or the entire site could disappear. And if it does? How do you just re-add 36,000 connection points?
Let's hope myspace recognizes a great user in Adema, and resurrects their url. Otherwise, how much potential revenue is lost for Earache Records? How much word of mouth is lost because of the cheap and ease of marketing through myspace is gone? How does Adema and Earache's relationship potentially strain? When you have a band like Adema, an entity once signed with Arista, we all know they can still reach globally to a lot of people...

Cyberspace, for all it can be fun and useful, IS NOT REAL LIFE. Thanks for the reminder. All us computer-junkies need to hear this one more often!
This myspace has been pretty fun all in all. I take it lightly for myself, but I totally understand the hit dealt by Adema. They are here to promote their music, business, livelyhood. Hopefully the jerks will be reckoned with. I was hacked once, and probably will again. I mean on the bigger picture, who hasn' been hit by a virus or worm on their computer. We're constantly being attacked by humans trading creative talents for cheap thrills. Same kind of idiots who waste their artistic or writing talents, by spray painting crap on private property!Wasting creative business sense on selling crack! Wasting enterprising skills on stealing cars!...oh well, just gotta smile and get through it...
that sucks,
and it has made me stop and think about the site in a new manner. You bring a lot of good points to the table, all of which have merit and need to be discussed.
perhaps flesh out the idea of the software package and hosting off site. That seems reasonable, but would the price tag be? considering the amount of lost revenu generated by ads, I doubt myspace would consider it.
The one way to help prevent such a catastrophe is to change your password.
I recently experienced a situation where a friend of mine had supposedly posted a bulletin "new pictures posted" in a hyperlink.
I clicked on it, and was rerouted to a page which looked just like the log-in page.
This immediately brought two thoughts to mind: 1) my friend doesn't know how to HTML code, and while it is a simple task to create an anchor reference for text, if you don't know how, you can't do it. And yet here was an anchored hyperlink that redirected the browser to a login screen... something is not right here.
2) on closer inspection of the web address at the bottom of the screen, the first (or main) part was not "myspace", but something else. Myspace did not appear in the address until the third or fourth descriptor.
This led me to immediately back out and manually redirect back to my site.
I immediately noticed in the bulletins that I had somehow posted the same message which my friend had posted... something is definately not right here. I erased the message, posted my own that attempted to warn my contacts of what was happening, then I went to my account settings and changed my password.
So far I have not experienced any foul play on my page, but I believe that the "ghost" login screen was an attempt at gaining login information.
What I don't understand is this:
myspace has enacted "safety mechanisms" within the canel account section which contact the email address you signed up with, verifying the delete file command. How the hacker/phishers managed to get around this safety is a cause of concern. Maybe they "forced" their way in to the system... I don't know (I'm not the computer geeky type, I'd rather be playing my bass...), but the situation does deserve attention. Would myspace ignore this trend of security attacks if suddenly one of their paid advertisers were affected? I doubt it.
I wish the best for Adema, and when the new album comes out I'll look for it. It's good to hear that they are back up and running, and are attempting to reconnect with their fans. As for the rat-fuck who instigated the assult... "revenge is mine, sayeth the Lord"... but this case may call for a few instruments helping the big guy out. That being said, retribution of biblical proportions is in order for the malicious little shit who instigated this attack. If he can be traced through the false site which magically appeared the same day; I have two points of advice:
1) take it slow and methodical, don't make any mistakes.
2) dig the hole BEFORE you take the body to it, and be sure to use at least three bags of lime.
Best of luck - thanks for the article.

Jenraven: what is real life?
DW: Don't forget monday lunch. And I doubt if the jerks will ever be found. Unless they brag about it which sometimes happens in these cases. It's probably someone in Bakersfield. That's my guess anyways.
ALC: Your words are pure wisdom, brutha.
I HATE THOSE PEOPLE WHO JUST WANT TO SCREW PEOPLES LIVES UP U KNOW.
it so fucked up. my artists from australia had their shit hacked and deleted when they got here to the states this summer to record and showcase, it fucked alot of shit up. and now it is still where people can email them at STONE PARADE but they cannot reply. anything they have as STONE PARADE on here on myspace they have their shit to wher they cannot reply to messages.
SO THANK U ASSHOLES.... THANKS FOR FUCKEN PEOPLES LIVES UP YA PRICKS.
and please tell the guys i know what they r going through. i have toured with KRIS alot and i have so much respect and love for him, and the guys, man they don't deserve that shit at all. it so hard enough to make it in this business, it is like "people just need to learn how to respect people's shit, and support everyone in no matter what they do, especially ur life long goals and dreams."
take care man

A conversation on myspace:
Nikki: and you're surprised?
N.L.: I didn't say I was surprised.
Nikki: Then why post it likes its something new
N.L.: It's newsworthy. Someone gets shot by a gun. The news runs the story. But people have been killed by guns before... It's cool. I don't mind the criticism. Some folks care, some don't.
have the had any luck getting help with their page,,I can call a friend and see if it can be fixed or resurrected. That really sucks,,
AS far as the day Myspace shuts down, something will pop up in the void! Remember Mp3.com? Oh my god! It's gone! All of our plays and networking GONE! It sucked for about a week and everyone was back on track...I think of myspace as mini little net, don't forget the internet is what the tiny little myspace is on. If you're only networking on myspace, sucks for you.
If MySpace really cared, they would have it backed up on their server, and have it back up. When we were on MP3.COM (another free site,) we had an incident, where everything was hacked, erased, and gone. I made a call, and talked to someone about it. A day later they told me about how they back-up everything, just in case this type of stuff happens, and it was live that same day..
Kinda like we do at:
**Adema's got a profile..
Cheers,
Matt
sad, sad, sad.
question for kenny: other than myspace, what else do you network on? just curious...
Myspace is a life leech.
After reading alc's post, it is exactly what happened to me. The mirrored profile posting "new pics", and other stuff. It was a few days until a few friends sent me messages that I was probably hacked and to get a new password. My myspace isn't used like Adema's, so I don't really give a hecky darn if I have to erase and start over. I wish the Adema guys the best though, hope it turns out for the better.
Oh my! That would be so heartbreaking! All that networking gone in an instant!
No prob! Besides the obvious sites like Lostcherry.com and tagworld.com, I try and utilize these as well....
nlbelardes.com (of course)
Bakotopia
Krab
you tube
tinfoil.net
punkrockidol
lacitybeat.com
blogger.com
spraci.com
artistdirect.com
other bands...etc etc!
Doesn't every band do this?
All Your Blogs Are Belong To Us
All Your Blogs Are Belong To Us
All Your Blogs Are Belong To Us
All Your Blogs Are Belong To Us
This is the kind of thing that frightens me. Nothing I write isn't already backed up as a word file, but I'd hate to lose my blogs and all the comments and things that go with them. MySpace was something I got into on a whim, but it's been good to me. I'd hate to lose that.
Mento Buru is all over the net. MySpace is just one place.
-Garageband.com (offers lifetime hosting, and is a great networking site for bands.)
Kenny and I speak the same language.
Word.
Hey Matt. I just went to Garageband.com for the first time. Thanks for the tip. You guys got a ton of songs posted on that page. Very cool. Wondering though, there are no CD's listed and no Gigs listed under those tabs. Is this site just used for the song play page? And also, the band profile was a little outdated ( No Cesarman G-dog on the tubs!). It looks like a cool place to download a load of tunes though.
Why someone with 36,000+ friends doesn't back up their friend list is beyond me. Would you go into the studio to record your latest record w/out having backups? No. Would your hired publicist only keep one record of their industry contacts? Heck no. These 'friends', atleast the active ones, are fanclub and industry contacts, and should be treated as such for any music artist. You should have their info logged just as you would with any other fanclub database...assuming you're not just adding anyone and everyone who likes numbers more than active helpers genuinly interested in your music.
As for comparing MP3.com to Myspace isn't exactly on the same level...MP3.com is more like that PureVolume site.
Just my 2 francs.
Networking. It's a pain in the nose.
Hey N.L...
Thanks for the support! Just read your blog; We've been busy rehearsing some new songs all weekend, and I just got home.
I haven't heard back from anyone at myspace yet, but the "imposters" that I think may have hacked our page have apparently - He posted a new blog you may want to check out @ www.myspace.com/ademametal
They're being shut down. It's a small victory, and makes me feel a little better. Hopefully, I'll get some news about the old page today (I figure it's Monday; everyone's back in the office...).
I'll keep you posted when I hear some news - Take care my friend, and thank you ~

Dave:
When people try to shut us down, that just means we're doing something right as artists...
I think myspace has its purpose, and it's a bummer that Adema's page was shut down. However, I think it's created a sense of social isolation. My buddy Bryce used to refer to the kids he hung out with in highschool but never contacted outside the home as his 9-5 friends. This takes it to a new level. You don't even have to get up off of your ass to make a phone call anymore. It kind of worries me.
