Local music writer, Jesse Rivera steps back into the music - By N.L. Belardes

Jesse Rivera is writing a lot more on his new ill as ever blog, "ValleyScribe-Viva the Ill Press". He's talking sports, he's talking movie reviews, and he's talking his love of music in both the local and in the global music scene.

One story that really grabbed me was "Vecar, the sit down". He talks masterfully as an ex-musician and lover of writing should: with passion. Read on:

Vecar, The Sit Down - By JR

I aint even gonna lie to you folks cause you been too good to me over the years. About a year ago shorty after the last Karmahitlist show and just before the last Gramercy Riff show, I groaned to NL one night at Vinny's "...dude i'm done reporting on the Bako scene" I remember the look of disapointment on NL's face but I didn't care I was tired.

Tired of seeing all the good bands get pissed at each other and disappear. Temperd gone, Ridicule gone, Broken Record Gospel!!!!......gone!. Fuck it I'm done for a while. I needed to take a break. So I disappeared, got lost in a job, pretty much ignored the scene. Listened to the Filthies on my Ipod and chilled. Then I run into Cesareo one night cause that dude is everywhere and you cant help but run into him from time to time. "I asked him who do I need to see?" because back in the day it was C-Gar who turned me on to all the good local stuff. " Vecar, you need to check out Vecar Riley's Sunday Night Vecar, check him out" So I did........

....Here's what I thought about Vecar, you can find the whole story here on my Bakotopia page"... I grabbed a Pepsi and took a seat in front. Then this kid comes up to the mike talks a little about what he's about to do, and proceeds to throw down. No, bizarre sounding machine like rock n roll sound buzz and fuzz. But some cool ass drums and bass with some shreddin guitar. This kid looked young but he played like he grew up in the 80's just like me.

In a strange music-related note, The Dives made ink in the Bakersfield Californian. I have no idea why. Not because they're a terrible band. They're good. I wrote about them first in my article, "The Dives swim ashore in Bakersfield Bermuda."

The problem is there are a lot of Bakersfield bands who don't get ink in the Californian. Why the Dives? Who is doing who a favor, I wonder? Is this a reporter's legitimate love for music and we're going to see a turn-a-round of press for local music? Who is Erik Lloyd?

Why did he write about The Dives?

In another note, I have to say that I haven't been asked to be a part of The Random Times staff. I know. People fear I'm going to somehow turn Napoleon, or think I only think about myself, blah blah blah. But hopefully the Random Times will get off the ground as a Bakersfield alternative press.

I heard they asked Matildakay to do music reviews. I guess they forgot I can write more than just about the Lords of Bakersfield. And what about Jesse Rivera? He truly pioneered music reviews here in Bakersfield. His gutsy music writing has bands begging for his return to the scene... and he has part-time...

Hola Nick..just got back in town..

If you refer back to an old post here on Paperback Writer, I gave everyone the scoop on Erik, and simple directions on how to reach him. Erik's a cool guy, new in town, and would love to hear from others in the community to learn.

Re-post my "Tips To Get In The Californian," I can't find them..

I'm soooo glad that Jesse is writing about music again! The scene has missed his voice!

You NL and Jesse are much better choices for music reviewers than I...

    Twinkie found it!!:

This was a comment I made on one of your earlier posts:

Does everyone just assume the paper is going to run and cover their event, just because it exists?

I've always done a few things to make sure my Mento Buru stuff was in the paper:

    1) Never rely on e-mail alone.
    2) Always drop a flier off at the
    office, addressed to the person
it's supposed to reach, along with
    an e-mail.
    3) Call and e-mail the reporter's
    office to follow-up on the
listing, one or two days later.
    4) Remember, one reporter can't be
everywhere at once, and just like
you and I, sometimes we just want
to chill and not go anywhere.
Work is work, no matter what job
you have, and people want to
    shut-off.
    5) If you get left out, take matters
into your own hands, and Promote Yourself!

    Grassy Ass...

It's a little known secret that nlbelardes.com is all over google.com. So if you google key words it's almost guaranteed that it will link back to nlbelardes.com It's how I found Matt's post.

And before you say it... YES I know I am a dork. In fact, google that.

"Norma is a dork" It's such to link you back to a picture of me somewhere. Hopefully fully clothed.

Or it may just link you back to all of my dorkassed posts on nlbelardes.com
