Office antics abound in the CSU Bakersfield Culture of Silence - By N.L. Belardes

She walked into the president’s office with a tape recorder. There was a university reporter too. I won’t say the year. The president began spouting answers. He admitted that he wanted to turn CSU_ into a Latino university, that he wanted the entire 4th floor of the university library to be his offices. He admitted his favoritism to Latinos. All while the tape recorder was running. Then he said, “That was all off the record.” And then he demanded the tape. “I’ll have to take that,” he said. There was an argument. The reporter and his helper refused. Why had he said what he said knowing full well a recorder was running? And then the president said, “If you don’t hand over the recorder I will have you both expelled from the University. I can have that done.”
And so they handed over the recorder. (True story, though I won't say which campus)
It was an office moment worthy of television…
One of the most popular shows on television is The Office. You get to hear all the gossip—watch it unfold, really. And you get to see characters whisper fears of their boss, have crazy relationships, all behind the scenes, as not all the characters know what’s going on with everyone else.
Don’t worry. It’s just television.
But what about the office gossip where you work?
Cubicle Dweller tells her tales every so often about Bakersfield office life. I even have a book titled Cubicles that I think would be a smash hit. Why? It’s about office antics, office romance, office craziness... Even Matildakay rants about her office in her “Invasion of the management consultants” and “Valley of the Crows” blogs.
Yet there’s more to real life Bakersfield office gossip than just what you can find in the excerpts from my book, Matildakay and Cubicle Dweller’s rants on office interaction. Believe it or not, there’s a lot of Bakersfield university office gossip. And it’s all documented in a blog titled, The CSUB Voice.
But who is the voice? A collection of office ranters? A selected few intra-office haters? Faculty? Staff? Professors with a vengeance? Haters of the administration? Disgruntled pen pushers?
You get a lot of gossip in the CSUB blog, and it’s all public information. And it’s hilarious. Oh for the less ambiguous stories though. Much of it is told to protect people in their various positions and offices, so you don’t always get the juicy details. But if you start reading, especially in the "Culture of Silence" blog, and ensuing comments, you will get more than you bargained for. Think higher education is about educating the students? Think again…
Read the comments about racism, sports over the deep end, Division 1 blues, overpaid administrators, Arciniega vs. Mitchell, executive assistants with big hair and too much lipstick, office talk gone haywire, name calling, political naysaying, incompetent leadership, and my favorite overblown stories of a university with a graphics department that doesn’t want a graphics department, oh, and the infamous flying blue pen!
I now present you all with CSUB's disgruntled office voices in the "Culture of Silence"…
*Note: Don't think all the comments are from 2005. They're not.

I really, really enjoy reading these

Everyone loves office gossip. This will make for some fun reading. And I love Cubicle Dwellers blog on Bakotopia. Your novel Cubicles is a comedy masterpiece I can't wait til its released.
Thanks for the links NL. :)
If I could get away with it, there is so much office goings on that I could write about. I dare to mention the office once in a while on my blog.
I've been reading the CSUB Voice for a few months now. I work there, so these names have real faces to me. While I'm never directly involved in any of this ridiculous drama, I'm always affected by the results of people not doing their damn jobs.
I'm glad it's there, though. People need a place to vent and blow some whistles from time to time.
I remember reading in the CSUB Voice that CSUB officials tried to shut the blog down. I wonder what the story is behind that...
CSUB's tennis courts blow! I mean what corndog batter fried twinkie on a paper plate brain plants Pine trees next to a tennis court?sheezmasqueezeboxhonkinstunkerfud!
mmmm twinkies! Yummy! But never fried or frozen. Icky.

I hate to get you guys back on track, but have you ever been in a culture of silence?
as a csub alum, this is VERY entertaining reading. culture of silence... HA! i bet this is only a small percentage of the ridiculousness behind the scenes at this and probably many university campuses. i'll be reading this for awhile!
It's amazing what you hear when you listen ... Especially when they don't know you understand most of what they are saying.
Thanks for reading my rants Matildakay, and thanks for the shoutout NL!

Nice...
Cubicledweller & MKay, are always fun to read.
Deep-Fried Twinkies!!! Yay!!
I normally don't use someone else's blog to plug books, but my first one was all about office culture. The Slam and Scream (written when my last name was different) was about my years as a NASDAQ clerk and later a legal assistant before going back to college at age 28.
I included LOTS of stories about cubicle culture, sexual politics, and more. Can't believe I spent so many years in an environment that was so off-the-mark for me personally. The culture of silence was and is alive and well. Now that I'm on a college campus things are better, but as NL's original story points out, universities are far from immune. Sometimes they're worse, because universities spend so much energy congratulating themselves for being "open" that when people do complain, few believe them.
Body: ...that's why i'm in school where i am, altho it's an insane hoof to get there and proves i'm an obsessed alcoholic to be doing such a trip:

fortuna, how dare you plug your great writings... hey, I don't even know about your published works. You never share the goods!
Holy hell.... I just got done reading all of it and I'm surprised I made it out of that blog alive!
*checks to see if head is intact and if ass hasn't been chewed off completely.
Honestly though, whoever started that blog had a great idea. Everyone needs a place to vent so they don't go crazy. Just hope it's not too late for some of them. haha. JK sorta
Was this 97-98? That was the year I was on the ASI Board and we dealt with Arciniega's Library Floor takeover and also the year Don (a Board Member) got his tires slashed when he tried to investigate MEChA's off-campus funding.

I can't say where or when.
"Everyone knows I'm a disgruntled ex employee, with not one grain of truth to what I say."
Ok guys, you can put down the guns, I've said what you asked me to say!
I love this blog. I get to use the word "gadfly" to describe it.

I have to admit, CSUB’s voice is a country-western hit just waiting to happen: “The Ballad of Nancy and Jane” could be the theme song for the trailer-trash remake of “Thelma and Louise.” I know every office has its own drama, some of it just silly. But there’s a lot that qualifies as serious abuse, and staff life at CSUB is definitely no exception. I remember a Californian story about the former police chief there, accused of embezzling thousands of dollars from the university’s budget. Rather than fired and arrested, he was helped to find a position at Fresno State. But an administrative assistant who refused to take shit from arrogant professors in the school of education was falsely accused of theft and forced to endure years of difficulties until a judge ruled CSUB was completely out of line. That double standard, when reported, should have raised the ire of everyone in the community, but didn’t. And the shit goes on, as it does in every office. But this is a state agency, and the money being used to fund the shit is OURS. So when a CSUB president threatens expulsion to a student when his own words bite him in the ass, or when a financial aid officer threatens to withhold their money unless students pay her a cut, the university has a responsibility to all of us to take appropriate and ethical action, not turn away and pretend it didn’t happen. So I’m very happy to see that CSUB has a forum to air at least some of its dirty laundry. We can laugh at part of it, but there’s some of it that deserves to be taken very seriously.
You are absolutely right about the seriousness of the abuse that takes place on this campus. Yes, the police chief was given a job in Fresno, the financial aid officer who was receiving kickbacks was also able to resign withhout punishment, I don't even think they made her pay the money back & the staff member who was accused of theft WAS rewarded a settlement because of CSUB's misguided actions. All of these took place under Arciniega which explains why the financial aid officer was not punished. She had been recognized by the Hispanic Excellence Scholarship Committee as an outstanding award recipient and I am sure Arciniega did not want to bring shame on that organization.
After working here for many years I have heard countless tales from other staff who have been truly mistreated, denied reclasses, in range progressions, etc. Unfortunately the union representation on campus is weak at best & though we were hopeful when a new union president was finally elected, unfortunately he is as soft or as scared as the past one.
As far as the Ballad of Nancy and Janie, it is still going on. Administration has taken GREAT lengths to protect one of their own, Nancy, and unfortunately Horace Mitchell chose to do absolutely nothing about it while he had the chance. I imagine he is still feeling the pain from that mistake as the university is not able to hire new people for those positions for several more years due to the union contract.
Those were were laid off ARE probably better for it but it doesn't mean that we should bury our heads and act like it doesn't matter. It should be a wake up call for all of us on this campus who feel so safe and secure in our jobs. All it takes is your boss to hire one person who they either like better, can manipulate easier and you can be gone. Both people who were laid off had years of seniority over Janie. They are still gone & Janie is back at work in her old job. In fact, I won't be surprised if she is promoted to the Duplicating Machine Operator II position that was advertised last month.
Unfortunately, my fellow staffers, since we are outnumbered by administrators at this point, the future for us is pretty bleak. I would love to see this blog show up in the Californian--too bad our main news source is so biased.
