The Random Times in Bakersfield Main Stream Media - By N.L. Belardes
It's great the Random Times got mentioned in the Bakersfield Californian. Yet, I don't know why they wanted to get main stream media press if they're an alternative to the local Bakersfield MSM. Interesting, but I don't think the main stream press brings credibility or validity to a local alternative press. Consistency, and consistent good articles will build readership and loyal readers at that. And hopefully the Random Times will enjoy some success, although they mingle with the writer/publisher from The Elitist Press who I believe is possibly responsible for myspace.com hate sites. I believe it's the Elitist Press complete lack of integrity which caused their paper to crumble, and people from their staff who continue to spew hate (although I have a sense of humor and still love the Samoan shower scene).
A portion of Erik Loyd's article reads:
He (Mongold) said he's passionate about politics but isn't interested in muckraking, finger-pointing and promoting wild conspiracy theories, as is often the case with independent papers. What he wants is thoughtful, well-written and relevant journalism, and Random Times will accept anything from anyone -- for free, of course.
"There will never be anything in there that serves no purpose," Mongold said. "There will never be anything in there that is malicious."
Maybe not in the Random Times, but malicious name-calling on Paperback Writer has occurred in the name of The Random Times. Is there a line between print an online when it comes to a paper or its representatives making malicious statements? Interesting. You decide.
I can no longer suppress the online discourse between citizens, myself, and the Random Times. In the end I have to show more integrity by allowing the discourse, than by disallowing. Originally it was my idea to pull the articles. But after reading the Californian report, I believe that readers will want to read all sides of issues regarding the Random Times.
I am not republishing out of malice, but out of the need to not suppress what I believe is a very minor news story in the happenings of Bakersfield media. I wish the Random Times nothing but success in their endeavors. We can all learn from discourse. I know I do.

You're obsessed with us.
And it's actually becoming kind of cute.
Maybe that goes both ways since you're constantly on Paperback Writer. :)
Don't forget, I've reported about other news sources as well: Blackboard, Elitist Press, Channel 17, KBAK, KRAB, KGEO, KCET, Renegade Rip, Bakersfield High Newspaper, Howardowens.com... and more...
I enjoy reporting about the news.
Excellent.
So we can finally live as one.

Umm... whatever. Media is media whether it is online or in print - tabloid rag, newsworthy - doesn't matter. And about that muckracking, finger-pointing, promoting conspiracy theories... doesn't everyone do that? It's marketing... Reporting something and placing it on record somewhere is still reporting.
AND, if you read the past RT posts that were placed on PW, you'd see maliciousness.
Peace out,

James: I never had a problem operating my media site in Bakersfield along with the Random Times.
Anon: You know who you are. Don't call names if you won't leave your name. There's no credibility in that. Remember, this is my forum, and I can decline troll comments.
chingpea: Interesting point that news is marketing.
I liked this first issue alot.
I got my copy at Borders on Stockdale/Calif. Ave., the only drag I see for these local papers/mags. is they station them in a corner kind of away from the main door traffic! Why is that? There was a huge stack Wed. afternoon, along with MAS and some others. But shouldn't these be out front by the door when you enter or exit?
Is that a Borders thing?
I had to ask where they were. Guess I never paid attention to the local mag corner!oops. Just seems that more people might pick one up if it was in plain sight for the average joe. Like Camera Ads!
Anyways, I enjoyed reading it, looking forward to the next one!
My favorite article was by Greg Goodsell on the Omnipresent Puppet Theatre. Well written and a cool Bakersfield ongoing cultural and artistic event...
Yeah, the puppet theatre article was a big highlight! Another new awakening to a happening here in ol B-Town. I had no idea! very cool, very cool...
I'm glad you put the articles back online. You shouldn't suppress the news! The online discussion and attitudes of the Random Times on Paperback Writer deserves to be viewable to everyone.
And whether the Random Times believes it or not, online media sources and records are just as important to history as print. Just ask Howard Owens.
Anonymous ranters: I declined your comments because you didn't attach your names.
I'm obsessed with good writing and integrity. Therefore, I am obsessed with your page. it's okay, I can admit it...
I've been getting a few obsessed hate comments too. Attempts at discrediting. I just think if people don't like what they read they should click on another web page... there's plenty of other blogs in the blogosphere.... I get really bored with anonymous comments too.
The interesting thing with those comments we don't get to see because you're not allowing them is this....
Didn't James ask his friends to PLEASE stop the madness? I could have sworn? And so James and N.L. seem to be getting along? Or at least agreeing to disagree but James friends obviously aren't respecting James' wishes.
I wonder if this drama/negative attitudes will carry on into the paper? I hope not. I really enjoyed a story or two in the RT and I look forward to watching it grow. But it's the same negative and defensive attitudes that caused the demise of that other paper.. what was it called? Ellitist?
Another thing I want to add is that I'm getting tired of being called a fish just because I'm a Paperback Writer fan. Or maybe he wasn't referring to me and I'm just being defensive myself? oh brother now I'm just confusing myself.
I read something somewhere that said..."When people that don't even know you hate you, you know you're the best!" I live by that motto now. Keep up the good work, Nick. It's sad that the truth makes people turn into hate mongers, but you've got nothing to back down from.
I won't be allowing the hate comments. Too weird. I don't mind people attempting to discredit me. But using my own name is strange. I don't think I need to get into a credibility battle. That would be dumb. If you don't believe in citizen journalism/blogging, then don't read Paperback Writer.
You don't have to have a degree in journalism to blog. Modern media is going through huge changes. Read howardowens.com, he disseminates a lot of changes in today's journalism in regards to blogging, videos and more...
Attempting to discredit blogging is a mute point and simply shows an unwillingness to listening to the debates within journalism itself.
And remember, if my recent blogs were so off the mark, why did Bakotopia once again feature such on Bakotopia.com? That's a conscious decision by MSM to use citizen media blogging as a form of news.
Freedom comes with responsibility.
That goes for freedom of speech, too.
If you want to exercise your freedom to say whatever the hell you feel like saying, have the guts to leave your name ... and to take responsibility for what you say.
I vote for the Hectic Films entry. They have some interesting short films. I think they have potential.
