First Noveltown Bookshare to be held in Los Angeles this weekend - By N.L. Belardes

LA poet/writer Rich Ferguson strikes the pose

I’m proud to announce Noveltown’s first bookshare, a literary event at the home of Spoken word LA poet/writer, Rich Ferguson on December 9th. Noveltown recently announced behind the scenes its idea for literary Bookshares, “informal parties promoting books that include readings, intellectual stimulation and media coverage...”

Originally I spoke with Malcolm Margolin of Heyday Books for advice on the idea. “It’s not a new idea, but it’s a necessary one,” he said. “The world of publishing is getting tougher. Bakersfield is already marginalized from the publishing world, so when you start a publishing company there, you’re already in an uphill battle.”

Thus the idea for Bookshare was born. Think of it as a Tupperware party for books. Instead of signings always taking place in bookstores, this takes a book event to the people. And it’s especially good for folks who host the events. Why? Cross promotion. Each Bookshare surrounds intellectual stimulation, readings, and because Noveltown runs the Paperback Writer blog, and because of Paperback Writer’s affiliation with Bakotopia, that means each Bookshare event is a media event.

And events in Bakersfield don’t have to be hosted at a home. Noveltown can provide a free venue for a Bookshare hosted by you.

Personally, I’m looking forward to breaking bread with Rich Ferguson. His CD is a remarkable achievement in spoken word/music, and he’s going to be featured in a documentary—always very cool (Read my review of Ferguson’s album, Where I Come From). And I can’t wait to see what other kinds of artists, writers, and business folk attend who I can report on…

Stay tuned for blog and video reports on Noveltown’s first Bookshare event, which will be featured here on Paperback Writer and on Bakotopia.com. If you’re interested in attending this cozy Los Angeles literary/media event, please contact melinda@noveltown.net.

Oh man, I love this guy! I go to his myspace page all the time and chill to his spoken word. :)

I think his CD would make a great Christmas gift.

*hint *hint to anybody reading this that may want to buy me a present for Christmas....
