The Grizzly Owls debut in Bakersfield, CA on AIDS awareness night - By N.L. Belardes

Bakersfield AIDS awareness needs to happen. Kids are getting infected...

I had a great time at Backstage on AIDS Awareness Night. It was a free show with Bakersfield area bands performing for nothing more than a handful of free condoms and a lecture from Shantell Waldo about global AIDS statistics.

OK, I’m joking a little. It wasn't a lecture-filled night. There was a table with educational literature, and a cool memorial quilt for an AIDS victim hanging on a wall for all to sign. It was a night of wonderful camaraderie as I got to talk to Heather, Darcie, and Shantell, not to mention Jenny and Joseph Andreotti, Sarah (Oh So Awesome), Rickey Bird, and Chris—he’s a local photographer out in the scene.

Take a look at why Shantell Waldo was at Backstage at 20th and M Street in Bakersfield on a freezing November night:

YouTube video sound sucks on the upload...

This video actually had a funny ending, with me saying to my kid standing close by shivering in the cold, "Boy, she's talking to you!" You can't hear it because the sound doesn't synch.

Bakersfield's Backstage...

Early stages of an AIDS Awareness quilt

I didn’t stay for the entire show, but watched three of the six area bands in the house. I saw Red Italy, The Grizzly Owls and Three Chord Whore take the stage.

I hear Red Italy is out of Shafter, CA. Their lead man was kind of quiet, but what mesmerized me was the talent and potential of their guitarist. He could shred and looked like he might have been a high school student. I imagine in a few years he could really become a complex musician, shredding a path through rock and roll stardom.

Red Italy performs. I dig their guitar work and drumming for sure. Go to their myspace site for more cool tunes.

It was also the debut night for local pop synth rockers, The Grizzly Owls (Used to be Calico Sunset)

Jenny and Joseph of The Grizzly Owls kick it

Hey, Google Video does work better than YouTube...
Watch the Grizzly Owls perform 1.5 songs...

Interview with the Grizzly Owls

Last up was Three Chord Whore. They're back now that Darcie Blake has had a baby girl named Veronica Lively. Oh, yes, you love the name... She described her baby which sounded like like she had birthed a rocker supermodel. I love their song, "Horseface". Darcie belts, "Look at me, look at me, I'm a stupid drama queen!" When Darcie got a little cold someone threw a jacket onstage... Darcie ignored and went on rocking...

Lovely. Darcie rocked even more, and even traded out with Heather who took over at the mic. While she sang, Darcie played guitar... and when they were done, I booked it back to the ghost streets of Oleander...

TCW: I had a great time, one of the best in the music scene. I love when the coat went flying onstage and someone yelled, "What about masturbation!"

Your story (Shantell's) about the quilt was amazing, and it's always good to see when she pays tribute to her past girlfriend who succumbed to the disease.
