Rural Rock Punk makes the paper – By N.L. Belardes

Rural Rock Punk in Bakersfield?
I know, I know. I’m tooting my own horn. It’s good to see the phrase “Rural Rock Punk” being exposed to a wider audience in the article on The Filthies. Erik Loyd wrote in “Band holding its own against young(er) punks”:
This is The Other Bakersfield Sound. Instead of twangy Telecasters, silky pedal steel guitars and a country beat, The Other Bakersfield Sound is rude, aggressive, distorted and anything but country.
The Filthies deal in The Other Bakersfield Sound, or as the band's members like to call it, "rural rock punk."
Although band members of The Filthies and a few other local bands use the term, "Rural Rock Punk", it's important to note the term had its start by a local blogger/novelist. Me! Woo! OK, not to get all fancy, but I admit, Loyd is being bold by using the phrase, "The Other Bakersfield Sound". What does that phrase mean? Does it mean music that isn't country, or a new rural rock punk spin off telecasters? He does say it's "anything but country."
I've thought of using such a catch phrase, but I've always thought it best to wait for some resurgence in country music before launching into such phrasology. But who knows, Loyd used the phrase, and now let's see if that will catch on or if "Rural Rock Punk" will, or both!
Loyd wrote "Rural Rock Punk" in paragraph two, after three plugs for The Other Bakersfield Sound. But why am I really pointing this out? Several reasons. Reason #1: just because I want to piss off Heath Dobbler and Rob Shock of the IN-Denials (Read about those Rockers). They’re two local rural rock punkers of the highest caliber (They hate that term). But who knows, maybe they’ll come around…
Another reason is that Erik Loyd did a damn fine job with his article in the local ragalagadingdong. Sure, a few tidbits might have been left out. Remember, he doesn’t control the editing process. And yes, you have to love his call-out: “The Other Bakersfield Sound”. He’s trying to start a new catch phrase. I like that.
Let’s hope Loyd's phrase catches on with “Rural Rock Punk”. Or maybe I should just say The Other Bakersfield Sound is Rural Rock Punk…
Read a slew of Rural Rock Punk articles. You won’t regret it.
Oh, and catch The Filthies at B Ryders Jan. 19th, 8PM as they release Your Turn... or Dirty Spanglish at Backstage at the same time if you want an all-age venue (See the crazy flier). Darn I need to be two places at once again.

I would definitely say that I like the term "The Other Bakersfield Sound" better than that other term you use, which I still hate.
It is good, isn't it? Bold, and good.
But then, it says nothing about punk, and you have to know what the Bakersfield Sound is. I'm thinking of people outside of Bakersfield...
People know what rock is, people generally have an idea of punk, and often know what rural can connote....
But it's all good...
Cause I love you too, Rob.
Congrats to the Filthies! They're taking their brand of "Rural Rock Punk" and going places! I'm sure Ireland and the world beyond will love them as much as I do. :)
Great article in the Californian! I like the phrase "The Other Bakersfield Sound" it's catchy. It's nice to finally see Bakersfield bands getting written about in the Californian. Kudos to Erik Lloyd.
NL, Maybe "Rural Rock Punk" will be the new buzz phrase in Ireland and Heath and Rob will have to finally accept it. You never know, it could happen. :)
I'm thinking Rob and Heath would have to be kidnapped, made to wear orange jumpsuits with black bags over their heads. In their ears would be nothing but various forms of Bakersfield punk music, broken only by the insane laughter of Kenny Mount and the occasional whisper of "rural rock punk" by guards wearing Nixon masks. Oh, and they'd have to be starved too. Only then would Rob and Heath accept their fate.
I always sound like Scooby Doo when I say "rural"
ruh-roh!
Ruh-roh rock punk.
Try me fool... A little starvation and I'd be fit for fitting again.
Rob and I have Irish DNA in our genes and irregardless of any new trend, "get pissed" will never be replaced.
Just accept the fact that we will not carry "your" mark of the beast... you horn tooting fascist.
heh.
ummm... cool that the filthies are featured by the paper... except i'm not too crazy about the photos... wonder why they couldn't use the nice ones you take of them. hmm... must be a "paper" thing. lol.
Not worried about the photos. I'm sure there are bitter feelings at the Californian. But that's OK too. They protect their own. And as I've said before. I'd rather they dislike me then dislike all of the music scene had I posted quotes from theatre, music and other folks unhappy with local scene coverage under the Belton era.
It's good to speak out. I would do the same thing again. In the end, I'm really happy that the Filthies got some press. They need to keep it up and send out their press packages all over the planet.... Bakersfield is a nice start. Now they need to focus on other areas. We're just one small town.
Noveltown has been reaching to other cities and will start soon in a big way.
