Pipehead comic gets political, but first, a photo of a truck with a non-partisan message - By N.L. Belardes

Just to let you know: I'm getting political on Paperback Writer this week. I'll be posting a satirical Pipehead cartoon that's sure to raise a few eyebrows. I suppose it will be my own way of criticising the American-Iraqi war. It will be the first in a series that will see if I can tread a fine line of humor, satire, criticism and my own patriotic consciousness.

But let's start off with a photo I took at Bakersfield's The Marketplace recently. I don't remember which movie I showed up to see a few weeks ago, but I do remember snapping this photo of a truck:

Is liberalism an illness? What is liberalism?

Now, I know I entertain readers from the full spectrum of American political ideologies: conservative Republican warhawks, moderate Democrats and Republicans, Independents, and full-on left wing conservatives. We're a dynamic group, especially politically speaking...

Differences aside, I wonder what you all think of this photo and its message? What could be the truck owner's agenda? Is liberalism an illness?

    propaganda!

  2. Blogger Dobbler | 1:03 AM |

In this town, his agenda is to get his windshield busted out, but hell yeah I agree with the slogan.

  3. Blogger n.l. | 1:10 AM |

But what does the slogan mean to you, Heath. I want your interpretation...

Miss Meg: She voiced her opinion in one word. Good job!

Not saying I agree with either or... I just want to see what people think.

He's probably just another average person who is sick of the rapid de-moralization being loosed upon our nation. I do think it's a sickness.

Didn't start out that way but it has evolved into a sickness since it's inception.

We can't spank our kids, kids suddenly have the mental capacity to make decisions of life altering proportions without their parents involvement, they're trying to up our tax contributions to 61%, they're engaging our rights to freedom of speech, they're considering cutting off funds for our troops (right or wrong they're at war),n they fight for the rights of people who shouldn't even be considered human... i.e. murderers, rapists, molesters, etc...

they give more of a shit about saving a tree than they do righting this country.

What I'm trying to say is...

Fuck Nancy Pelosi... and I hope I spelled her name wrong.

People get caught up in liberalism, and before they know it, it has fucked up their lives and they are delusional? Like alcoholism?

  6. Anonymous Greg Goodsell | 5:56 AM |

It's a dorked up version of Michael Savage's phrase "Liberalism is a mental disorder," except he didn't know how to spell "mental disorder" --

Back in the 70's, Bakersfield trucks would have gun racks on the back windshield...

All this left wing, right wing, chicken wing, maxi pad with wings stuff confuses me.

Hey I saw a bumper sticker the other day that was a flag, then it said, "ANYBODY BUT HILLARY". ha. it made me chuckle.

  9. Blogger n.l. | 9:14 AM |

Dobbler: Can I ask--where you work, are there more Dems or Repubs? Do you mind talking on here about your day job? If not, just ignore my questions...

SR: I suppose any political view point can be filled with idealism and delusions of political grandeur.

Greg: Although I am moderate Rep., I can't stand the radio Repub talk jocks like Savage... I always think: aren't these guys just really in it for the money? Look at Rush. That guy bashes people left and right, then goes and buys drugs.

DW: I bet there are still guns in those trucks...

Norma: I love how you express your political views so passive aggressively...

  10. Blogger Dobbler | 9:37 AM |

It's probably half & half during the actual work day... and mostly dems during the night with the punk gig.

    Anymore questions pooh bear?

I'm still waiting for Mission Family Mortuary to call me back about the coffee maker/ floor sweeper position I applied for in Oct. 2004... Then I can be surrounded by Irish Catholic Republicans... I can't fucking wait.

N.L., do you think you can help speed up the hiring process with all of your influence?

  12. Blogger n.l. | 10:02 AM |

Oh come on, Heath. You know I applied for the same position...

  13. Blogger Dobbler | 10:19 AM |

    STEALER OF ... MY JOB!!!

All this talk about 'de-moralization' implies that there was some time when the country was, in fact, 'moral'...
When was that exactly? When was all the bad shit not happening? When were those all-singing, all-dancing years of yore?

People see 'illness' in others when they are incapable of seeing their point of view... which, in its own way, might be considered an 'illness'.

  15. Blogger n.l. | 11:49 AM |

    Good point, Ken.

The nation sure went through some 'moral' bouts during America's age of Intolerance. All those womens' groups spoke out against drinking and immorality, and got laws into effect, then eventually were repealed. Such social control just shows true colors--people want to spell morality within their own boundaries...

Calling either side of the political spectrum an 'illness' in my opinion presents a difficult road of 'no' compromise...

What happens if the Democrats end up not just controlling the Senate and House, but the White House? Republicans will want compromises.

I try to look at such political sides as just different points of view. Being a warhawk isn't an illness, and peace protesters don't have some strange infection that makes them value life differently than perhaps someone willing to sacrifice blood for political aims...

The person with the truck has a right to show off their truck and make it a political statement. Yet to me, the wording is condescending and farcicle. At the same time I understand what some of the conservative intentions might be behind such a message.

Thanks again Ken and Heath for your dichotomy of opposing views.

You would have to be blind, to not see the huge ball of shit known as our society hurling itself downhill at an alarming rate these days Ken.

Not that this Country was ever a place to be labeled "pure as the first Winter snow" but it has gotten worse... morally, mentally, physically, and conscientiously... just to name a few ly's.

  17. Blogger n.l. | 12:08 PM |

It's cause of all that gawt damn rock and roll!

  18. Blogger Dobbler | 12:23 PM |

You're probably right... I always figured Elvis was a Liberal... the whole army thing was just a cover-up

  19. Anonymous Norma | 2:22 PM |

This huge ball of shit known as our society hurling itself downhill at an alarming rate has been doing so since "biblical days". don't forget the big flood (to flush out all the shit... didn't work) then Sodom and Gomorrah. again... didn't work.

No amount of liberalism, socialism, republicanisn, left wingism, right chicken wingism is gonna change that. We're all just shit. Shit I tell yah, shit. yup I said it. SHIT.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go drive by D.W.'s house and fling some trash and condoms towards his house. It always makes me feel better after a long shitty work day. oops I mean.... ah shit!

  20. Blogger chingpea | 3:21 PM |

the current pipehead comic had me laughing... thanks.

per the message, it's just for attention. people will believe and follow what they may, and no one will ever agree to anything with each other so there will always be someone telling somebody that they have an "illness" for whatever reason.

shit. there. speak your opinion, support what you want and fuck what everyone else thinks... ha ha.

  21. Blogger dw | 6:20 PM |

I kinda like Michael Savage's show now and then, cause it's the only time I get to hear Rammstein and Pantera on Bakersfield radio right in the middle of the afternoon. AM at that!

Mental illness is the last attempt at critical thinking for the right. The facts are that the greater your education, the more likely you are to be Liberal. The more urbanized you are (the worldwide tendency, and still growing) the more likely you are to be Liberal; the higher your IQ the more likely you are to be Liberal.

A common conservative problem is, and always has been, to be shackled more or less by the inability to escape thinking of people as unified all-of-one-mind typecasts. Since you can't see the flexibility in people given that model, you follow a normative, punitive social philosophy that is bound for bankruptcy. Already is, but if you can't see it yet, you will.

Mental illness? Sure. Just like the member of your family who continues to behave in ways you can't understand and yet whom you can't get rid of. "There must be an explanation for this", you seem to wonder. "Can't be genes (I share them). Can't be religion. Must be mental illness!! Sure, that's it!!"

This society rolling downhill like a giant shit ball? Yeah, maybe. But that slippery slope was invented by the right. Trying to stop the rolling ball ain't gonna work. Best join the Libs in this country who are trying to at least steer the mother in it's descent.

Thanks for the rant chance, NL.

I thought all the Raider stickers in this town were an affront to decency but that takes the cake! What a sad angry lonely little person that must be.

    Hey I got it!

I'm gonna paint my back windshield to say "Raiderism is a mental Disorder!"

  25. Blogger Dobbler | 7:46 PM |

You took the words right out of my mouth with the whole steering thing Mr. Bramer.

Instead of directly combating this huge ball of shit (trying to stop the fucker in it's tracks)... they (the libs) are merely trying to deflect it's energy with a glancing blow into another direction.

Same can easily be said about their Conservative counterparts, meaning in essence... neither side does a fucking thing about the direction of this Country, hence, nothing gets done.

Both sides sit around and play the blame game, as we all have here, with our self served comments.

I think I have been pulling the morale card a little too much here as of late, so I'll return to my roots and drum up the beat of common sense.

I refuse to align with individuals who on a daily basis prefer to go out of their way to dream up some non-comprehensive bill to lay before the courts to be passed upon the American people, (not because it's deemed "better for our people" or "what the people actually want") because it may somehow pad their pocket book, or win them whatever popularity contest they've entered themselves in (and again, both parties are totally guilty of this act).

I lean the way(s) I do because, I don't really feel the need to live in a world where parents can't discipline their kids, yet can be held fully responsible for their afore mentioned kids turning out to be what society deems "pieces of shit". I don't want my 12 year old daughter entrusted nor empowered, with the ability to decide to abort a child without my knowledge or guidance in the matter. I would like to feel safe in the fact, that as an (somewhat Christian) American, I would be entitled to the many rights of "freedom of expression", "toleration" and "freedom of religious practice", as are currently being granted to my Atheist/Homosexual/Illegal Immigrant/Muslim neighbors. Whats fair is fair, and by that I mean, it should be just as OK for me to be offended in the same ways and manners as they are, and be afforded an equal right to make it recognized from an equally acceptable platform. I would like to see our Justice system rule in favor of the actual innocent for a change and quit playing up to the folks that have gone above and beyond the act of living as terrible humans, making society more and more unsafe.

This is just the short list.I know I won't get any help in resolving these issues from a Liberal. Hell, Conservatives aren't really rallying to my side either. But, they aren't (atleast as far as majority is concerned) the group responsible for trying to literally dismantle what common senses and common practices the people have left.

You choose whatever side appeases you,
it's your right just as it was this individual's right to paint a slogan on their automobile, but choose wisely because that choice won't be available for long.

So there you have it. It's not an Illness afterall... It's a choice.

    Sheesh.

  26. Blogger Kenneth | 9:08 PM |

You want to know how to live in a more 'moral' time... right now?
Turn off your fucking TV set!
    Put away the newspaper...
Step away from the internet and go outside...
This sense that our society is going downhill is largely an illusion created by the media.
Every evil/titillating/crazy thing is being filmed/written about and sold to you as infotainment.

Do you think priests just now started being sexual predators?

In the 'good old days' you didn't hear about any of this stuff unless it happened just around the corner.
You weren't privvy to every little bit of backyard gossip and sin being committed like you are now.
Wives were still being beat, children were being sexually abused, people were doing lots of drugs that weren't even illegal yet.
Black men were being lynched without anyone batting an eye... unless it was when they bought a picture of it as a postcard to send to their friends.

In WWII U.S. soldiers sent home Japanese skulls to their sweethearts... is that your moral compass?

When is this magical time that you want to turn the clock back to? Because with every decade you are gonna gain at least as many evils as you'll lose... you want to go back to the days of slavery?
What about prior to child labor laws? Before there were any safety codes for workplaces?
Before anyone cared what got dumped into the air?

One solid thing I see disintegrating is community.
We're all insulated in these little cocoons of information, thinking we really know what's going on outside... when really we don't even know who our neighbors are.
Again... a lot of that is due to our sucking on the glass teat of the media... who are telling us what reality is so we don't have to go out and see for ourselves.

  27. Blogger dw | 7:05 AM |

Kenneth is right on! And cell phones are just as disjointing. We think we're being social 'cause we're actually talking to someone, but actually totally disregard the moment going on around us. I was at B.C. last night, in class, and before the first break, I couldn't tell you how many people got up to answer their phones. Disrupting the class with those booty-blowin ring tones, then blasting out the door so they can hurry up and talk!. And it's happening in high schools everyday!
The programming is already in place little sheeples...cell phones in your ears...TV's in your car...Computers in your pocket...
I will say, a good blog sure can be optimistic and stimulating though. Thanks again N.L.!
