A Bakersfield Cowboy and his Dog - By N.L. Belardes

I didn't stop to talk other than to scratch the puppy's head for a moment. I didn't even ask the cowboy's name.

But that wasn't what was important. It was the moment. A young guy and his best friend--the beginning of their friendship, really.

It could have been on the outskirts of town on a ranch. It was timeless but only lasted a few moments. I was on my way on a sidewalk in a strip mall...

Reminded me of the dog I used to have... Do you have a pet story to share?

When I was a little girl my mom came accross an abandoned nest of bunnies. So she brought them home for us to nurse. Well, I tried to feed my bunny and well... it wasn't that hungry. So I kept accidentally shoving milk up his nose. I ended up drowing it. I still feel like crying when I remember the dead little bunny in my arms. I am a bunny murderer.

    that's oddly funny, norma!

that's a great, classic pic - the puppy was adorable!

the only funny pet story i have is when i thought my daughter's pet turtle was dead - until i stuck my finger in it's butt (like uma thurman did in "the truth about cats and dogs")and it's head came out. it's still alive!!! woo hoo!

    i'm still learning about turtles.

I once had a cool mutt named Sammie that I always regret having to give away after getting married (Long since divorced). Anyways, I got two great kids out of the marriage, but lost a friend, and I don't mean the ex (no offense if she's reading).

I LOVE The Truth About Cats and Dogs! Great movie! Umah Thurman is awesome! I also loved her on my alltime favorite movie Beautiful Girls.

How funny that you thought the turtle was dead hahaha.

We had a dog when I lived in Mexico. His name was "Balin" which means Marbles. hahaha He would follow us to school every morning and follow us back home. He was run over eventually. Poor doggie.

I had some Sea Monkey's once, ordered from the back pages of an old comic book.

I felt like Cartman from South Park when I got them in the mail and "grew" them..

There was no family, no house with a TV set, and no pet dog Sea Monkey. They were just damn brine shrimp with a life span of three days swimming in circles looking more like Sea Fleas!!

DAMN YOU SEA MONKEYS! DAMN YOU!!

Great Photo! So much going on... the eyes are piercing.

I've had three family dogs in my lifetime. The one that gave us the most trouble was a mutt we named Lopso because he seemed lopsided some how. But he was always running away as soon as the door opened. We would chase him down the street yelling "Lopso". One day he ran away and we never found him.
